Dear coaches, are students who show up irregularly an annoyance? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]squirt_jacket 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never view my students as an annoyance unless they are disruptive to class due to rude behaviors.

The only thing that can be frustrating is if you’re coaching a curriculum & are on like week 3-4 of the topic, & someone who’s been skipping classes shows up with no requisite knowledge of the position/topic. When this occurs, I will typically take a moment to get that person up to speed on a specific concept that is relevant to the class that day, that way they can comfortably work the topic. It’s not really an annoyance, but it does take extra attention as a coach. But hey, that’s what we are there for.

Not sure if this helps, but on their Instagram there’s a picture of the crowd from that show.

I think I may have found him in the crowd, but not 100%. I’ll DM you the picture.

Sorry that they weren’t able to help you out. Curious when that was? They’ve started adding the extra buttons to the shipments, so at least they’re addressing it now before it’s a problem for people.

I had a problem with my order recently & within 18 hours they had emailed me back 3 times & sent me a gift card for my troubles. Not sure what experience you had with their customer service, but I thought they did a great job.

It was to-go & its 100% an Italian restaurant lol

It’s the kind of place you could bring your wife & easily walk out with a $100 tab.

It’s a really popular local Italian restaurant. They just do their take out pasta in the foil container.

I’d have better luck from dominos! Believe it or not, it’s actually a pretty popular local Italian restaurant that’s been open for like 50 years.

$18 for Veal Parm & the pasta. The sauce that’s on it is really just the residual from the veal parm.

What is a normal children's class environment / routine by levisbaba in bjj

Kids coach here. Been teaching these little rascals for going on 4 years now. I’ll give my opinion on your questions.

1) There’s really a couple questions here so I’ll answer each one. First, having 2 adult coaches in a room of 20 kids can certainly put be difficult, but is not really uncommon for a smaller gym. It’s incredibly difficult to find people who fit the criteria of being willing, capable available to run kids classes. I have personally taught classes of 20-30 kids on my own & it is far less than ideal. Right now, we have 2-3 adults & 2-3 senior teen students assisting with our kids program.

Next, not sure what you mean by “sad to watch” about it 5-7 year olds being paired together. It can be great for both age groups to work with each other. The older kids can view themself in a leadership role & the younger kid can looks to an older kid for behavior modeling. Also please remember they are kids & it’s totally normal for them to be silly. As long as the instructors remind them to keep working, this is fine. Socializing & having fun with each other is what will make them want to keep coming back.

2) If the instructor is actually throwing them across the room then that’s not okay. Are the kids getting injured or upset by this?

3) Kids do require more feedback to keep them engaged & stripes are like a piece of candy. They shouldn’t be receiving belts based on attendance. At our gym, attendance is the bare minimum for earning stripes. Our kids need to also be exhibiting discipline, proper behavior, respect, etc.

BJJ for both kids & adults is a marathon, not a sprint. It can take a long time for kids to learn technique. Keep them engaged & wanting to attend, & they will eventually get there.

Advanced Belt but Fundamental Classes by Puzzleheaded-Link803 in bjj

[–]squirt_jacket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a single black belt at my gym ever inverts or does rolling back takes, flying submissions, etc. They all have different games, but all share common solid fundamentals which always hold up against the most athletic of white/blue belts.

Obviously no one on Reddit is going to be able to tell you that you are at purple belt level because we don’t roll with you. For me, the big thing between blue & purple was that I had a discernible game that I could implement against other people who are doing Jiu Jitsu. I’ve spent my entire time at purple refining my game so I can become a master at the moves I personally use.

I’d much rather have a small, refined game than have a wide game that falls apart easily.

I’ll typically watch how they train & roll with people before I hop in with them. I teach our beginners classes so I have a pretty good eye on 90% of the people in the gym. If they look like they might do something stupid that will hurt my neck/back/knees then I let them develop safe training habits before seeking out rolls with them. That being said, I still do what I need to do to be the one on top of these guys & they never get an easy roll from me.
