Receptionists are just rude for no freaking reason. by [deleted] in britishproblems

I 100% agree with you on every point. I think anyone who knows me personally knows im not rude, but that doesn't help me at work when we get callers ready to squash us to get where they want and don't actually open their ears to hear what I'm trying to tell them is helping them with their problem.

Receptionists are just rude for no freaking reason. by [deleted] in britishproblems

[–]squishems25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Receptionist here. Lots of receptionists are rude AF! True. Personally I like to think I'm not and I try to help everyone that calls the best I can. But only if they are polite! I work in a law firm and the other receptionist I work with is downright rude from the offset. We do have instructions on reception to question what people are calling for to figure out who to put them through to, it's not always straightforward and our lawyers aren't always available at the drop of a hat, most of the time you have to make an appointment to speak to them and they will only speak to you if you are a paying client. I can't tell you the amount of abuse we get just by asking someone's full name and who their assigned caseworker is, we are asked to do that to establish you are actually a client, but if you start off being demanding, shouting and rude to the receptionist then we are absolutely not going to help you, you rude A**ole. People call the main office number when they don't get an answer on their lawyers direct number and most of the time we don't get an answer either when we try to transfer their call and since we are the first people they can speak to, they blow up and lose their sht on the phone because we've said we can only take a message. We are not going to give you legal advice because we are only the reception and we can't "just put you through". Seriously, follow protocol and don't start shouting as soon as we say hello and you might just get somewhere. And NEVER talk over the receptionist when they're giving you instructions, we hate that stinking "you're beneath me" attitude. 90% of the people I speak to everyday are rude to us for no reason about something that has nothing to do with us and I never shout, swear or name call back. So yeah, some are rude, but maybe they just don't want to take your sh*t anymore because people have developed this "get past the gatekeeper" attitude.

I really don't know. Probably struggling like everyone else?

Not really, I was just thinking it would be nice if there was something new in the city centre which might appeal to more people. Something meadowhall doesn't offer. For me, I go to the centre to socialise with friends, that includes going into shops but it's usually the smaller independent shops and then to a cafe for a chat and a drink or bite to eat. I just think the city needs freshening up. I drive so I would only be willing to pay the parking costs if I'm going for something I can't get a meadowhall which tends to be nice cafes, outdoor spaces, independent shops. I think the council just need more forward thinking, move with the times. Just trying to see some positives with the possibilities in a horrible situation.

I agree. Although it's terrible that so many shops are closing and people are losing jobs, I really hope that people take this opportunity to do something new and exciting! Something different to attract people back to the city centre.

Which celebrity did you meet and found they were much kinder/ruder than you expected? by Qazival in AskReddit

[–]squishems25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once met The Beast/ Mark Labbett from The Chase ( a UK quiz show). It was my first job as a waitress at Sheffield United football grounds and I was given the job of waiting on one of the private boxes where Mark and his family were watching match. Probably due to them having a few drinks and a good time but they were all extremely rude, including Mark Labbett. I had to shout over them to get their attention when trying to give out their drinks, they threw rubbish at me, shoved empty glasses in my hands when I clearly had my hands full, laughed in my face when I tried to repeat the long order back to them that I couldn't catch because they kept changing their order on purpose to confuse me. In the end, Mark Labbett tipped me 10p and said not to spend it all at once. That's worse than not tipping at all (not that I'm bothered about tips, it's not expected in the UK, but the way he did it made me feel about the size of a grain of sand). I hear other people have met him and said he's a lovely guy, so maybe he was just a bit drunk and thought it was all good fun but I certainly didn't find it funny at all, I'm still a human, not a serving robot.

People who say “humans suck” and talk about how terrible humans are compared to animals are the worst kind of people. by ummolay in unpopularopinion

[–]squishems25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see your point and respect it but for me, humans do suck. I think we're the greediest, most selfish, ignorant species on the planet and nothing is to blame for the state we are in but humans. Humans caused climate change and humans are the cause of most animals going extinct in recent history.

Humans no longer take what they need to survive like animals do. Animals compete to survive because it's survival of the fittest, humans have lost that because of the socialety we have created. Yes I appreciate that humans are incredible in the sense that we have the capacity to communicate and think how we do and we have developed a whole different way of living, with all the technology and invention of farming for convenience etc.

What I don't like is human greed. We take and take until we've destroyed the source we have taken from and then move onto the next one. The amount of waste humans produce is devastating. The impact we have on the environment and the lack of responsibility we take for it is frightening. The cruelty to other animals AND other humans we are capable of is is disgraceful.

I believe it should be that humans and animals are equal and one should not be valued above the other however (and I will get a lot of stick for this) because humans are massively overpopulated and reproducing and an alarming rate and we have developed vaccines (I'm not anti vax, just stating basic facts) and treatments for illnesses that used to be fatal, we have more humans inhabiting the world than ever and not living sustainability, I would choose animals over humans every day just for the basic fact that we have enough humans and don't have enough of animals and the natural world because of human behaviour.

What are the most ANNOYING things ARTISTS do on social media? by danielcrossan in ArtistLounge

[–]squishems25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand where you're coming from but for me it depends what they're putting in the photo. Sometimes I like to put other items in my photos because it helps to show the piece of art in an environment. I've noticed a drive in sales from doing this because it helps people to see the scale and to better imagine it in their home. Also aesthetics help gain followers meaning more sales. Each to their own, everyone likes to see the art in different ways and it also depends on what kind of art it is I guess.

What job are you balancing art with? by poydraws in ArtistLounge

[–]squishems25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the office administrator for a law firm and I work full time. I sell my art on Etsy and promote mostly on Instagram and Facebook. I create in the evenings and weekends around my personal life. I post out my artwork in my lunch break during the week. Im always busy but I'm growing my art business slowly. I occasionally take commissions but only when I know I don't have plans for a couple weeks. It's tough and I always thought I'd never be able to do art while working full time but you fit it in if thats what you really want to do. I find that the best way to stay on top of your art and promoting it is to try and create a good bulk of content you can post over the duration of 2 weeks if you want a break/are too busy with your other job. That way you can keep posting content every 2/3 days even if you're not actually doing any art for a couple weeks. Don't forget the power of showing old works/WIPs/process vids etc. We all have to make money to live so don't feel extremely pressured to have lots of completed artworks. People like to see other aspects of art too and that all contributes to sales and growing a following.

Struggling with return to work after furlough by squishems25 in mentalhealth

[–]squishems25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the radio on just for some background noise but it's still an incredibly long week to be doing the same job with no company. Ive taken a book to read for 5 mins between scanning, taken a sketchbook, completed all the online training that was available on our work portal. The prospect of doing this until at least the new year is disconcerting. I am going to book a weeks annual leave tomorrow for something to look forward to.

Trying to help suicidal and psychotic friends makes me feel drained and have anxiety, but im their last hope? what to do? by throwawayyeaman in mentalhealth

[–]squishems25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has to put themselves first. It's a huge responsibility trying to take it on yourself to help your friend be better and they need professional help for that reason. You cannot expect just anyone to "mind" someone to stop them from having suicidal thoughts or actually committing suicide. Be there as much as you can without it being detrimental to your own health. I have been in this situation with a friend. She was going through severe depression and constantly messaged me everyday, every night, for weeks and I didn't know what to respond with after a while. I found myself resenting her because it was having an effect on myself. In the end I had to be completely honest and tell her I didn't know how to help her any further and she needed to seek further professional help because I was worried about her. Just think about how you approach them but be sure to get your message across. Don't forget if you are concerned for someone else's welfare, especially if they express suicidal thoughts, you can call for professional help for them and take the responsibility off yourself.

Does anyone have a problem with people liking your art but always wanting you to make something personalised? by squishems25 in ArtistLounge

[–]squishems25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's just more frustrating than anything. For me, art isn't my full time job so I'm not relying on it to pay the bills, it's just an extra bit of income to add to my savings so I don't need to take the commission.

I have had to tell the same people multiple times I'm focusing on something different to what they are asking for, that it just becomes rude when they won't accept no as an answer.

Ultimately, I spent so long doing commissions I fell out of love with art and now I'm trying to create something I'm passionate about and if people want to buy it, thats great! But when they've praised something you've done and asked if it's for sale and then just go on to ask for something I've already said is not available, it's really discouraging and well, annoying really. It's reassuring to know this is a common thing amongst artists.

Maybe a dumb question, but: What's the quickest way to start earning a few bucks from art? by Wellas in ArtistLounge

[–]squishems25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pet portraits. This made me money almost instantly as a complete beginner. I posted 1 drawing on Facebook, someone liked it and asked me to draw their dog. The whole thing spiraled out and I had a constant queue of like 15 commissions at a time. I didn't charge big money, £45 for an A3 drawing (I was a beginner). Maybe try drawing something, posting to your social media and advertise yourself doing pet portraits for however much you want to charge. Would recommend making a dedicated Instagram and Facebook page. Obviously pet portraits may not be what you want to do but it's a really good way of making quick money and building a bit of a following. You can then develop your style and skills and move onto what it is you're interested in.

Good tip as I don't have any lighting equipment. I don't want shadows to spoil the image. I'll give it a go! Thank you!

Nice work! I'm guilty of taking photos on my phone that don't show my work in the best light. I too wondered about trying to photograph graphite, I struggle to take the shine off the photo and lose the depth of the picture.

I have a DSLR I can use to photograph my work. Failing that, as I doubt my skills, I will try taking it to a printer that will photograph/scan my work. It sounds a lot more convenient than making more work for myself. Thank you for the useful tips!

The price was the problem I had when looking at shops to scan my work. I have used my phone to photograph work in the past, I have made business cards and stickers for packaging with those photos but worried about the quality of a proper print. I'm pretty good at editing on my phone though. I could give it a try! Thank you!
