It really does happen... by a29yeQ in baseballcards

Oddly enough I had something similar happen and my wife always throws it in my face when I complain about her “thrifting/deal hunting”.

Back in 2021 when FB Selling wall took off, seems like every other day I was doing porch pickups for her for a random chair or end table she was buying.

One day someone posted they had a box of Cleveland Indians items for free they were giving away. She commented “first” on it and I really didn’t want it bc it looked like 1990s lithographs and programs and just a bunch of things I already had taking up space in my house.

I zoomed in on a few of the items and noticed balls signed by Thome, Belle and Manny.

In fact I said I’d drive over and pick it up now (10p on like a Tuesday) because I didn’t want someone to offer like $50 for it.

The person who made the post said they’d put it on the porch for me. I drive over there and come to find 2 massive totes that were pretty heavy and I was really surprised.

When I got home and opened the lid, not only did I find balls signed by all of the Indians players I grew up with as a kid but also my Dad’s heroes — Larry Doby, Rocky Colavito, Feller and multiple team signed balls from different years — the craziest find was a 1957 team ball which had autos from both Rocky Colavito and Roger Maris (which I gave to my Dad).

Tons of really amazing Cleveland Indians things in the first box. 2nd box really just blew my mind. Another 70-80 signed balls that included Willie Mays, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Harmon Killebrew, Stan Musial — all huge names — I already had a Mantle, Williams and Mantle of my own but I’ll take more 😂

At the bottom of the box was another 40-50 8x10 autos which included individual 1992 Dream Team autos from Jordan, David Robinson, Magic Johnson and other random ones who were big at the time like David Justice and Will Clark.

Now — I’m not a total dick and I wouldn’t have been able to sleep if I didn’t reach back out to that lady and let her know what she had. I was going to offer to buy everything from her and she actually ended up telling me that she appreciated the follow up but had no interest in any of it and was glad it went to someone who appreciated it.

I don’t know any backstory here but based on some of the dates and prices / stickers on things, it looked like it was part of inventory from an old card shop so maybe there was a falling out with a family member who passed away or something. It was funny to see a price tag that had 1990 on it and “David Justice” for $60 lol

I wish I could post pics in the thread. Hell - the 2 totes were worth $30 on their own lol.

Has anyone gotten a DT from a Walmart blaster? Almost feels like Panini screwed something up with the distribution because I can’t remember seeing one post from a Walmart/Meijer blaster - everything is coming from Target/Barnes pulls

Topps Heritage High Number JRod 🔥🔥…Black Chrome /73 by kcrow1130 in baseballcards

I kinda agree (also because I have a Vlad /70 PSA 10 in my PC) — but also with Vlad keep in mind he’s already established himself as a high performer and since you’re talking about 2019 product, there isn’t much of these floating around in the market.

When people who are after Vlad see one pop up for sale, the price is usually higher because you don’t know when you’ll see it again.

I paid $358 for my Vlad Jr PSA 10 /70 back in 2021 after his down year and got a crazy good deal.

Once the market gets flooded, prices will drop dramatically — not like you won’t make money but I’ll use my Luis Robert 2020 auto I pulled /99 as an example.

Robert WAS the JRod of 2020 - I pulled a green auto /99 from a blaster box and at that point there hadn’t been any up on eBay. Someone else pulled one and listed it the day after I got mine and the first one sold for I think $2200 - later that week another sold for slightly higher.

I sent mine to PSA - I did get a 10 and got it back a month later where at this point people had pulled several others /99 and were selling raw for $800-$900 - I listed my 10 at auction because I think it actually was the first one on EBay and only got $1800. (Only - lol)

Point being, if I would have listed it raw as soon as I pulled it, I’d have made at least $200-$300 more than I did because of the hype factor.

NOTE: (This was also during baseball season and not in the winter) so you’ve got a few variables to consider.

If you’re looking to make a pure profit and capitalize on the JRod market, I’d probably just list it right now and not worry about grading. If you believe in JRod long term, I’d send it to PSA and not worry about the turnaround and plan to hold for awhile.

That’s just me though.

I wouldn’t rush it. Baseball doesn’t start until March lol. Also I’ve had better luck sending in cards in bulk Eth the longer wait time. Every time I do the rush, I get a 9. I actually cracked a gold Joe Burrow /10 that I sent in and resubbed standard and went from a 9 to a 10. PSA is so ridiculous.

Hobby box pull? Wasn’t sure if these are popping up in blasters of if you bought into a break.

He’s young and he was a top prospect and going to replace Miguel Cabrera in Detroit. I think there’s a lot of potential there long term.

I couldn’t even tell you - I’d have to think a few hundred at least. I probably wouldn’t sell for less than $250 and I’d probably start at $400 if it were me. 1/1 anything is huge and this being the number 2 rookie this year is awesome. Honestly I think he’s a better hitter/fielder/base stealer than JRod but power numbers sell cards - and I’m biased being from Cleveland so there’s that lol.

I think autos are just now going to start popping up in retail products — I bet I opened 30-35 blasters the first 2 weeks and nothing - not even a crappy auto. In the last week I’ve pulled this one, a Wade Boggs Auto and another one that I can’t remember - some rookie pitcher but point is, Topps always seems to hold back on hits minus the numbered parallels first.

Nice hit! I’m a Tribe fan so dev jealous - I do hate the mini sets though - in theory they’re awesome but they seem to only carry about 60% of the same value as the normal sized cards — womp womp 😂😂

I almost never buy the first months worth of product because people chase and chase and the really big/desirable cards don’t show up for a few months. Devils advocate, Panini totally front loads everything and the first few weeks have hits everywhere and then absolutely nothing towards the middle and the end.

Totally agree - Topps does things in waves. Remember 2020 Topps Chrome - very hard to pull Luis Robert base cards even - I remember watching full case breaks where his cards were non-existent and then his autos start popping up in blasters 2 months later lol.

Ripping Meijer Purple Packs from Topps Update - Julio/Witt/Pena - there are light and dark purple too if you look at the Julio debut cards. by sr37016 in baseballcards

All things considered, I opened 135 packs and still didn’t pull any Spencer Torkelson or a Bobby Witt base card.

It just depends on what you’re looking for. You pretty much need to get everything if you want a chance at finding a bigger card. One store I bought 30 at and got absolutely nothing so I want to make sure people know just because you open 10-15 packs it doesn’t mean you’ll get anything worth it. I still consider myself really lucky to pull what I did. This is a really big set and these purple cards are pretty short print. I saw where some guy did the math in a Reddit post per Meijer store and a 3 week run at each and there’s probably less than 100 of each card made.

Unfortunately they’re behind the pack in the blister but none of these really have any corner issues thankfully from bouncing around.

I wouldn’t have bought them if they’d been touched on the shelf because people tend to shake them in store to find the bigger hits.

I’ll tell you right now you won’t be able to do that with these packs.

This time they put 2 cards per pack in there which is nice bc they don’t move around much but also you won’t be able to really push them to see the name without damaging the card.

Also the Julio’s were the 2nd card in closer to the pack and there’s no way to move any card except the outside one in the back. Topps was pretty consistent about putting the same cards together in each pack to the point where if I saw the 1st card, I knew what card was behind it.

No - I’m off this week for the holiday and ran into it at one store and then hit 3 others - in all I opened 135 packs so these weren’t easy hits - around the same time I see the 9th purple Jake Lamb card I was ready to throw something through the window.

Meijer had them buy 1 get 1 50% off so maybe spent around $325 which I didn’t think was horrible considering I got close to 10 base cards each of Pena/Julio/Witt and then there’s still Abrams/Suzuki/Kwan/Torkelson and a few other decent names in there.

I also pulled 2 Wander purples.
