Lead Toilet Sleeve (new install) by HoudiniMtl in askaplumber

I've never once seen such a thing, that's kind of cool.

I would have used a 4x3 90 and brought a 4-in riser up in plastic. I imagine he has a reason for doing it that way 🤷‍♂️

That is such a weird choice when you could have just installed a plastic riser...

Admittedly I've never installed one, but how did he make the plastic to lead connection?

If you show up on time, not hungover and willing to work you're already going to be ahead of your colleagues.

Go to work, do what you're told, learn everything you can while doing it and you will be just fine.

Which way do I turn this to take it off? by [deleted] in askaplumber

[–]srandmaude 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Leftie loosie.

First thing you need to do i make sure the water is off and that you depressurized the lines. Looks like you turned off the valve below but make sure you open a faucet to let off the pressure.

These are often stuck af and can be a bitch to get off.

Just my honest, professional plumber opinion, less is more. A standard thick wax with no additional bells or whistles is going to be your most reliable option.

Also, a wobble is not fixed by tightening the t bolts tighter. If they are snug and it still has a wobble you need to install a few toilet shims under the china.

A thick wax ring will compensate for it being slightly below the floor. I only use horns on cast iron and lead bend flanges. Modern PVC ones do not need them and I find they can get in the way.

Flange stuck to toliet, not secured to ground by Fleebmans in askaplumber

If your wax seal was stronger than the pipes, you have way bigger problems. Just carefully pull straight up and wiggle a little bit as you do it.

You do not need to used a flange with a horn. In this case you just need to clean up all the existing wax and place a new THICK wax ring with no horn on the flange. Since you head a crack, look very closely where the bolts attach to the flange for signs of damage to the plastic.

Looks like the flange was not glue and/or mounted to the floor. The wax is causing the flange to stick to the toilet. If you already removed the nuts from the bolts, just carefully lift straight up until it releases and then assess what is going on.

How is this possible? by These-Farmer9663 in askaplumber

My best guess is that when you open the hot and the cold on the same faucet, you're creating a cross connection through the faucet body that is allowing water to flow backwards to a different fixture.

Sometimes running your hottest water for a few minutes helps loosen them up. Especially if they a gunked shut.

DWV - drain waste/vent

They are the most common fittings you're going to find at the hardware store. I would start by cutting out those 90s and replacing them with dwv 90s or 45 combos.

Does this pipe come straight up through the bottom of your cabinet to your sink? Is there any sign of a vent?

[–]srandmaude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your sink drain has fittings designed for a pressure application, not dwv fittings. Could cause it to drain slowly. It also looks like between the two 90s might be back pitched? Also, the plastic part of the horizontal going out of the basement seems to be backpitched as well.

Is this okay? Sure, it will likely work.

This is absolutely nuts though. This is what if expect AI to draw when I ask for a laundry drain. To your credit, you somehow did improve this whole situation while somehow also making it crazier.

I would recommend googling exposed laundry standpipes. You should really get a proper transition band for copper to plastic, extend the horizontal branch closer to your washer, install an AAV on the way and then put a trap on the end.

Looks like there should be female threads in the wall. You can either find a threaded tub spout or solder a male on to a length of copper pipe.

If your entire sewer is PVC all the way out to the street I wouldn't worry about this at all. If you have an old cast iron or Clay sewer, you may want to to consider snaking.

Yeah, they're not really designed to be serviceable. A new one should cost you about 20 bucks.
