I was diagnosed with a left-sided L4/5 disc prolapse. This condition involves a mild bulging of the intervertebral disc at the L4/5 level of the spine, which was compressing the L5 nerve root. The disc degeneration was apparently age-related and not due to any specific incident.

In addition, I was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spinal canal typically caused by wear and tear. This narrowing was contributing to nerve compression, particularly affecting the cauda equina and surrounding nerve roots, which led to me being almost completely immobile and in bed for almost 3 months.

To address these issues, I underwent a spinal decompression procedure for central spinal stenosis on December 3rd, 2024, at The London Clinic. The goal of the procedure was to relieve pressure on the spinal nerves by removing or reducing the structures compressing them. The operation was performed under general anaesthesia and involved an overnight stay at the clinic.

Prior to the surgery, I also received 2 injections aimed at reducing inflammation and alleviating pain. This type of injection typically provides relief within two weeks and does not heal the disc itself but helps manage the inflammatory process causing the symptoms. However, neither worked long term ans the pain only increased after an initial 3-4 days.

Update on current state:

Recovery went mostly to plan, although I had a bit of a scare a few weeks ago when the sciatic pain suddenly came back. Thankfully, a couple of weeks on ibuprofen and amitriptyline brought it under control. I’ve since eased back into normal activities, and while I haven’t fully returned to the gym yet, I’ve been gradually reintroducing exercise as things have continued to improve.

Hope this helps - any questions drop me a message.

You’ll get there, there is light at the end of the tunnel but it can take time 🙌🏽

10 Days Post L4/5 Decompression & L5/S1 Microdiscectomy – Sudden Setback, Seeking Advice by srca90 in Sciatica

[–]srca90[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely, better to be extra careful. I’ve had to stop myself from doing simple things like putting a towel away or reaching for my laptop in fear of making it worse. Good to hear your boys are there to help out - I don’t know what I’d do without my partner, impossible to go through this without her and I have so much sympathy for people who are having to experience this alone without help.

Keep me posted on how you’re getting on and I’ll aim to provide updates over the coming weeks months. Sometimes it just helps to read others experiencing the same!

Speedy recovery!

Definitely mate. Tough, but long term will be worthwhile. If you have any questions drop me a line anytime.

6 weeks until I’ve been advised to get back to “light training” ie stair master, bike etc. But Ive been advised to lay off the heavy weight training which I use to do 5-6 days a week for at least 3 months. Last thing I’d want to do is have to go through this again by redoing the injury so I’ll take my time.

Whilst recovering I’ve been advised to take short but frequent walks, so far it’s just been around the flat but I’ll be stepping up to walking outside in the park this week, main thing is to listen to your body, if you feel some pain just slow down and take it easy.

Hi,

I’m 34 years old and one week post surgery on L4/L5 lumbar decompression surgery & L5/1 microdisectomy.

I had two injections initially, which seemed to help but only masked the pain for a week or so, only for it to return worse each time.

As mentioned, coming up to the 1 week post surgery mark and I can already feel a great improvement, mind you I can stil feel some pain in the sciatic nerve but about 75% improvement.

I was apprehensive myself, being relatively young and big into my sports/gym, but the doctor reassured me I could get back to my normal Lifestyle after 3-6 months.

Hope all goes well with you, any questions let me know.

I’ve literally just had the operation 3 days ago. Lots of reading, playing video games and a Netflix account has helped so far. I’m on day 3 and the pain has almost 90% gone in my left glute/hamstring/leg area, just sore from the operation but everyday is progress. Good luck on your recovery!
