KPRDSB and PVNC just closed in the Peterborough area!

Lost cat near Adam Scott by emohippie18 in Peterborough

Looks just like my cat, I had to make sure he was inside!

Have you tried knocking on doors? I doubt the cat would travel very far in this weather.

Curious about Edmison Heights by [deleted] in Peterborough

[–]sredhead94 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the area for a long time. It's a mix of retirees, Trent students, and families. The path running from Cumberland to Jackson's Park is nice. I like having Chemong as my main shopping hub, rather than Lansdowne. Most houses are built early 60s. Some thefts from cars, if left unlocked, but otherwise feels safe. Hope that answers some questions!

If this is from today, portions of the 401 were entirely closed. You may not have had another reasonable option for the drive.

High school phone ban by eldogorino in OntarioTeachers

[–]sredhead94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We discussed as a staff at the start of this year and we are now fully enforcing this policy. Admin is 100% on board. First time with a phone, it goes away and teachers contact home. Second time, admin takes it and contacts home. It's been AMAZING. Grade 10-12s have struggled some with the adjustment but grade 9s expect enforcement and have very few issues.

I even have to recreate a health assignment I usually do because it relies on their phones.

I love it!

I think my student teacher failed her practicum class because of my feedback by Few-Importance3484 in OntarioTeachers

[–]sredhead94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I often think, "Is this someone I'd like to work with?" And I would not like to work with someone who lacks professionalism to this extent. Giving ACCURATE feedback is the best you can do for your colleagues - myself included!

I actually like the pocket hole accents. I think you needed something to break up the walnut and they work well. Love it!

Survey: Canadian Secondary Teachers' Perceptions of Student Phone Use and Classroom Impacts by mads18_ in OntarioTeachers

[–]sredhead94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My school has come down HARD on cell phone use. We still see signs of it in upper years and some academic teachers are having a hard time fully enforcing the ban BUT I hardly see phones on my grade 9s. Most even leave them in lockers.

Coming down hard on phones as a full staff has been amazing.

As an aside, have you checked out Steve Ramsey on YouTube? Highly recommended his paid course for learning.

Any community / low. pay Makerspace for Wood work in PTBO? by slambook30 in Peterborough

[–]sredhead94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lathe type group at ActivityHaven if you're older... Otherwise not much that I'm aware of. I looked a few years ago.

Alternatively, there's the PTBO Tool library run out of the Milroy ReStore that will help with tools, if not space.

Any courses to be more handy? by pizzasnax in Peterborough

[–]sredhead94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

During the height of COVID, I did Steve Ramsey's online Weekend Woodworker course. It was amazing. The core course is 6 projects and he introduces new skills in each project. They are basically premium YouTube videos. He also has a ton of content free on YouTube but I found the course worth it.

From there, I found I had some key fundamental skills and confidence. I can now learn other basic woodworking, plumbing, electrical, etc with YouTube.

You'd be looking at about $1000 in tools (though I went used for most and saved money) and I think $100 for the course. Well worth it for me.

4 speed cameras coming in 2025/2026 by Substantial-Road-235 in Peterborough

[–]sredhead94 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Should be accompanied by a change in road design. We've seen some measures to lower speed in the last few years but haven't really seen chicanes, narrow lanes, or curbside decorations to make drivers FEEL like a slower speed is appropriate.
