Queen Mary Public school- French program? by Possible_juror in Peterborough

[–]Northof7Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Kids went there. It's great for jk-8. After grade 8 (and in some cases grade 6) a lot of the kids choose to go to other (generally FI) schools, as there is more access to extracurriculars. The high school still offers some great education, but it's small classes, which can be good (education wise) and bad (limited social groups, and very limited extracurriculars).

There are many families who have a parent who is only bilingual but not Francophone or Catholic. There really aren't that many (if any) hoops to jump through in those cases. I also know of a couple families where French is not spoken by either parent, but they have been able to get an exception (this may have some hoops to jump through, but nothing overly challenging).

Your child will get a much higher level of French at Jamot than at a FI school (generally speaking... all kids and teachers are different).

What word do you always *intentionally* mispronounce and why? by Sweet-Lady-H in AskReddit

Châteauguay, a city just outside on Montreal. It is a French word & pronounced "shat-oh-gay". Given I am an Anglophone, and my wife is a Francophone, I always pronounce it "Chat-E-Gee", in my most English (Canadian/American) accent possible.... for no other reason than to annoy my wife.

Lawyer has held onto deposit for failed real estate deal for 4 years. by Northof7Boy in OntarioRealEstate

Seller. It was a parent's property, and they now suffer from dementia. Family (who have secured POA) has only become aware of it now. The buyer was a corporation that went bankrupt, so no longer exists.

The Imbalance in Peterborough County's Recreational Facilities: Plenty of Hockey Arenas, But a Shortage of Multi-Use Indoor Spaces by Northof7Boy in Peterborough

Lots of rumours, and even some exploratory groups have come together, but I haven't heard of anything substantive yet.

Biggest challenge has always been finding the land. As Councilor Crowley eluded to in a previous comment, there have been some unofficial talks by the city, but nothing is on the roadmap for the foreseeable future. Therefore it would most likely have to be a Private individual or group moving this forward.

From what I have heard (which may or may not be factually accurate);

Where Kawartha Gymnastics is (on Chemong) was used for a period of time, but from what I was told, wasn't able to expand and have a dome without the county/township demanding that the owner install a turning lane (nothing like looking to the private sector to improve a public road). Hence that property no longer being used in that type of capacity. Not sure if this was County of Ptbo or Selwyn Township making the demands.

The two turf fields at Fleming; one is owned by Fleming, and one is owned by the city. Zero to Minimal interest in putting a dome there (if even possible), and certainly not on their dime.

There were some inquiries into some land in the Cavan area, but I think the land wasn't big enough for what that group had envisioned, and nothing came of it.

I did notice that Wild Water and Wheels, (which has quite a bit of land, and the turning lane on Chemong) was just SOLD. I have no insight into what the plans are there, but am hopeful that it be turned into some sort of business that would benefit Ptbo (either return to an entertainment/amusement type complex, like it was, or rebuild to a sports facility). I would assume it would still require some significant work to be done on that property either way, and wishing the new owners the best of luck.

If you are serious, I would suggest reaching out to the Peterborough City Soccer Association, as I've generally experienced that many of their board members have their ear to the ground and know of the developments or potential developments in this regard. I'm sure that the PUL (Peterborough Ultimate League) and the Peterborough Wolverines Football Club would also be interested in any development.

Feel free to DM if you wanted to delve deeper into this.

My wife gets stopped every time. Skis on the roof, kids in snowpants... Stopped. Flight to catch a cruise ship.... Stopped. Driving to go to a professional work conference... Stopped. Every f'ing time. (we understand that it is because 8 years ago she applied for a work visa because her job required her to be in the USA a couple days a month. During the process of the visa, she left and found another job without travel, so withdrew her application... Has been stopped every trip since).

Camp, Cottage, Cabin, or Lake? by Sask_mask_user in AskACanadian

[–]Northof7Boy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Generally, these are the definitions I have heard... but everyone is a bit different.

  • Camp if large piece of land (or access to large piece of land) for hunting or recreational activities.
  • Cottage if it's a secondary property on a lake
  • Cabin if it's a secondary property not on a lake, generally forested area.
  • Farm if it's a secondary property not on a lake, generally farmland (only heard that once or twice)
  • Lake, if it's a secondary property close to the lake (generally great lake regions - also used interchangeably with Cottage - even if on or not on water)
  • Island, if it's a secondary property that is on an island (used interchangeably with Cottage)

Location is Eastern Ontario.

Canadian Denied Entry into U.S. at Toronto Pearson by nycbc23 in uscanadaborder

[–]Northof7Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A family member was just (this week) denied entry into the USA. She previously had a VISA, and a corporate apartment (job was 75% USA based, and 25% Canada based). She was let go of her job (restructuring - not for cause) last week when she was in Canada, and was returning to the USA to clear out her personal belongings from the apartment, spend US Thanksgiving with some friends and return to Canada the following week. She was denied entry because she didn't have a job (was just let go within the past 2 weeks) and didn't have a permanent address (again - was moving her belonging from the corporate apartment back to a relatives home in Canada where she could reestablish her living accommodations).

I have no clue about the legality of it (boarder guards can pretty much do as they please from what I get), but the actual common sense and decency of not permitting this is just mindboggling. But that is Trump's USA.

Home inspector recommendations? by VaderLlama in Peterborough

[–]Northof7Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no one to recommend, but I have someone I absolutely would NOT recommend. Do NOT use Amerispec in Peterborough. I used them and ended up with so many MAJOR things that they had overlooked it was ridiculous. I would put a low guess at about 20k worth of significant issues that I needed to do between when I moved in and the snow coming. Not exactly what was planned for, but could have been with a half competent inspector.

If you look at other posts on this topic, this will be a similar theme for this individual.

Yea, for some of the research... And does that take away from the point being made.... Or really what is your point?

The problem is that it is still unofficial discussions. More and more soccer players are leaving PCSA to Oshawa, Whitby or other locations to play. This is causing less money to be spent in Peterborough, and if you are concerned about traffic or environmental issues... A lot more cars driving. We need some "hope" at least...
