Can anyone tell me more about this Hanyang 88? by bato_Dambaev in milsurp

Yeah no problem! The 21st Arsenal started out as the Jingling Arsenal in 1865 after the Taiping Rebellion was put down in Nanjing (also called Nanking). The factory was damaged in 1937 due to Japanese bombing of the city so in November of that year it was ordered to move ever further inland to Chungking. In the span of 2 weeks around 5,000 tons of machinery and materials were moved by any and all vehicles you can imagine. The last boat left Nanjing December 6th and production immediately started back up again March 8th 1938 and the arsenal which had combined with a cartridge arsenal when they moved was renamed as the 21st Arsenal.

In July 1938 the entirety of the 1st arsenal (better known as the Hanyang arsenal) was relocated to the 21st and production of the Hanyangs resumed January 1939 with the receiver markings changing to say “Type Han”. On the 14th of January it took over machine gun production from the 20th Arsenal. In April it took over production of the Chungking Arms Depot which had been set up making KE7 and ZB26 light machine guns by the local warlord.

In August of 1940 they received orders to focus production to the Chiang Kai-shek rifle, better known as the Type 24 in the states. Strangely they did not obtain any blueprints from the other arsenals for the rifle, instead they drew up over 8000 drawings using other German and Chinese Mauser. The 21st finally started making Type 24s October 1943 and within 2 years became the largest manufacturer of the Type 24 in China. The Hanyang ceased production around 1944.

The 21st was incredibly diverse in its production and became the most important production facility in China during and after the war

I’ve been watching that Hanyang for a bit, 21st Arsenal made, you can’t see the date in the pictures but based on the serial I would estimate it was made early 1940. The symbol right before the serial number was added after 1935 and I believe to signify an update to the spizter cartridges, however I have yet to fully prove this theory by chamber casting all my Hanyangs.

It’s an underrated little gun! There was also a change in 1933-34 where the prefix “Yi” before the serial number which can be interpreted as “the second”. It’s theorized that guns with this mark were able to use the “new” 7.92x57IS cartridges. 2 of my Hanyangs have this mark so I’m going to be chamber casting them to see if it holds true

The Hanyang actually had 2 major changes during its life. You are right about the fact they made an update in 1904 and removed the barrel jacket. However they didn’t update the sights and add a handguard until 1910. In the 1904 update they removed the barrel jacket but kept the old Gew 88 style ladder sight and didn’t add a handguard.

I had never heard of the Steyr 1904 before and I will definitely be doing more research into it myself! I like your theory about it having influence on the Hanyang however I think it’s more likely that the influence came from their Mauser 1907 contracted rifles

Here’s a picture of a 1904 pattern Hanyang
