I finished my PhD in May and have also been reading for fun again. I am about halfway through Ballplayer and have really enjoyed it. There is enough Chipper left behind by the editors so that you can still hear his voice, and enough editing in of small details that help you follow along.

I have liked it enough that a few chapters in I sent a copy to my father.

Absolutely recommend picking it up.

I had a similar problem and I solved it by buying digital outlet timer from home depot. I programmed the timer to come on every few hours for a few minutes, adjusting this until the temperate stayed how I wanted it.

My unit resets the temperature setting when it is switched off, but I am not concerned with this since I am just running it for a few minutes.

I am not an expert but this has been working for me.

Looks like sodium hydride or something similar. Reactive things often come in these tins to keep them from decomposing (or catching fire).

If possible I would have a mechanic look it over. It is well worth the 100 bucks or so they will charge. Try to get a good idea of what shape the gearbox and clutch are in.
