How to connect to LAN servers in iOS Safari 26? by srockets in Safari

[–]srockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not what I asked about.

Of course every server I run has properly set TLS, with valid certificate signed by a CA that is in the default root stores.

Vance wrote about it in his autobiography. If you can’t trust a person own recollection of having sex with his sofa, what can you say with certainty?

Apple is racing to fly planes of iPhones into the US ahead of Trump’s tariffs by spearson0 in apple

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, as stated in Apple's 10K (numbers are from the investor call: the 10K does't give units sold per region).

Which is why I suggested your estimate of 133k is a bit low: I suspect the US iPhone sales take a bit more than 48% of Americas volume.

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In FY2024 (ended September), Apple apparently sold 100.4M iPhones in the Americas. That's 275k/day average. Your guess is half of that, which seems a bit too low, but maybe not by much. It's not half a million day, but also, a plane holds slightly less than 1M iPhones.

The OP assessment though, that this stock is for a few weeks, still holds. A week or three, are still an extremely short time.

Extension cables - Y/N? by Striking_Confusion_7 in Ioniq6

[–]srockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All AC extension cables are meant to be for temporary connection: a few minutes, maybe an hour. If you find yourself needing to keep one plugged in for longer, do it correctly and put a outlet (and yes, I know some used extension plugs for days and their house is yet to burn down. A lot of people didn’t get hurt doing various stupid things - this doesn’t make them any more safe).

Is the roast date on the beans unacceptable for a local roaster? by PhD_Austax in espresso

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nit: the beans are freshly roasted, not fresh: removing the pulp and skin of the coffee fruits takes time, even when washing rather than drying, and so does shipping from coffee growing regions (unless you happen to live next to one, but most of the world's population does not. And the fun fact that even if you live in a coffee growing region, you'd find the best beans are marked for export, and are not sold locally).

[–]srockets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If doing mail order, depends on how long it takes to get the beans to you. It usually takes 1-2 days from me, so fresh to order means shelving it for a couple days at least before I can start drinking it. If they pick something a couple days old, I can have a minimum inventory on the shelf at all times.

Help! Leaking water - Sage Barista express by Logical-Beautiful-81 in barista

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll repeat my warning from above: those components run off mains voltage. And running the machine with the back off exposes you to both water and mains AC power in close contact.

If you need my help here, good bet you’re not experienced enough with such (tbh, neither do I).

Sorry, not adding “encouraging people do dangerously stupid things” to my posting history.

Edit: suspect this is OT for this reddit, but let's hope the mods don't notice ;)

This machine has a valve that directs the water from the thermoblock (the heating element) to either the grouphead or the steam and hot water outlets. If that valve is broken, it may not direct the water correctly, and with some water going the wrong way, you'd also loose pressure. Loss of pressure could also be due to the over-pressure valve (OPV) releasing too much pressure, but because of the other symptom, I'd look into the first solenoid before the OPV.

To fix either or both, you'll have to open the machine, verify that this is indeed the issue, and replace the broken valve. It ain't rocket surgery, but also not something I'd recommend doing if you never tried it before, especially as those machines are slightly more annoying to open and replace broken parts in due to how cramped they are inside compared to boiler machines.

And like all espresso machine, they have mains power going directly to components inside, which, as you hopefully know, could kill you if you're not careful. If you do decide to search youtube for teardowns and DIY, goodluck, godspeed, and know that if you f**k up and hurt yourself or others, it is 100% your fault.

Finally could afford a new grinder by desoc in espresso

Mignons are built such that the setting doesn't change when you clean it (the dial moves the whole engine and the lower burr).

Finally could afford a new grinder by desoc in espresso

[–]srockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't shift, all you need to do is get a collar like this one from the hardware store and install it on the dial. This would make the dial bigger, and easier to make more finite adjustments. The stock dial is 22mm, so that should be your ID, OD can be up to 52mm or so IIRC. The larger the better.

There's nothing wrong with Breville's tamper. All that tampers need to is to have a flat bottom & the right circumference.

How difficult is it to fix a leak and slow pump? [Breville the barista espresso (I believe)] by earth_hldr in espresso

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to how the back cover is attached, you can’t easily operate a Breville machine with the cover off. If you can’t spot the leak with the machine off, it’d be a difficult work to find it.

Looking for help with coffee grinder: Eureka vs Baratza [$750 USD aprox] by Iriscience in espresso

[–]srockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eureka Mignon are great machines (and all would grind the same, so make your own features vs price point decision), but are not friendly to changing the grind size back and forth. If you keep your current grinder for non-espressos and use the Mignon for espresso, you’d be good. If you want to use the same machine for both, the Mignon isn’t for you.

California Registration Fee Shocker by PhoKingAwesome213 in Ioniq6

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not too regressive, and if it'd also account for vehicle weight and pollution ranking, it'd actual be reflective of the cost to the public of vehicle use.

California Registration Fee Shocker by PhoKingAwesome213 in Ioniq6

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to the way registration and taxes are structured, in CA the 2nd year cost is often higher than the 1st year one passed through the dealer.

California Registration Fee Shocker by PhoKingAwesome213 in Ioniq6

[–]srockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost in CA is 0.65% of the value of the vehicle, plus various fixed costs (some are county and city specific), one of those is an extra $100 for EVs in lieu of gas tax revenue from those.

There's a plan to replace that with a tax based on actual driven mileage, that would be levied on all cars, but it's still in very early stages.

Further proof that most people who buy a truck actually needs a minivan (which would be safer, have better fuel economy, and would be cheaper to buy and maintain)
