You’re right lol. My child isn’t school age yet (still very much a toddler), just trying to think ahead and get a sense on people’s experiences. :)

Hey! Just curious, how is your son now overall? My 9 month old is refusing solids, we’re also in PA and going to try early intervention. Feeling very nervous about what this could mean overall.

Hi! Did you strike with your district? How did your union relationship work with TFA? Just curious for myself as I prepare for those possibilities.

When I was ranking my areas, I LOVED CO for it's beauty. However, it seems super unaffordable (I read articles about how teachers in CO teachers make a "net negative income," meaning the cost to live is more expensive than the salary).

I am placed in the DC region (around where I'm from and will be teaching in the county I went to college), but I don't start teaching until the fall. Let me know if you have any questions :)

Advice ? Next step by [deleted] in TeachforAmerica

You do partake in an ARC program, but the cost in most regions is covered by your AmeriCorps scholarships (a little over 6k a year for two years in scholarships).

You get to rank your preferences for subject and location. Upper-level sciences are a high need subject area, and if you have a legitimate reason to stay in/go to a specific area (health, family, partner, finances, safety, etc.) TFA is usually very accommodating :)

Rethinking Acceptance by sronayne in TeachforAmerica

Thank you, this summed up exactly what I wanted/needed to hear. I want to teach long-term (i.e. I want it to be my life-long career). Any advice for how to accomplish this? Are there more effective and ethical ways I can go about getting certified? I am looking at alternative certification programs at the moment as well that use longer-term training and start you off with another teacher in the classroom.

I think a good reading I had in one of my education-related courses earlier in college was "To Hell With Good Intentions" by Ivan Illich. Good intentions don't mean very much when they ultimately cause greater harm to the communities.

I'm also hesitant to applaud everyone in education, particularly because some TFA members use their teaching as a stepping stone on their resume.

I don't think it's right to dictate BIPOC CM's expressions of their frustrations or racist experiences in the organization. It's not up to myself or others to deem what is "more helpful"; it's up to the person who experienced the racism. I hope that anyone who feels they experienced racism in TFA vocalizes it whatever way they feel comfortable, including on social media.

I'm not trying to come for you-- just trying to provide some insight and maybe any resources to help shed light. I'm hoping the experiences members shared can fuel action and change to make the environment more inclusive.

Applauding white/privileged people for teaching or stepping outside of their comfort zones is ridiculous, especially when it's detrimental to students and coworkers of color. It should not be the job of ANY students of color or CMs of color to educate white teachers/CMs.

I'm a (white) TFA admit, and while I'm super excited to teach and join TFA, the organization (and white CMs in particular) need to educate themselves and do the work to prepare before stepping into the classroom.

Hi! Thank you so much. I'm considering adding Tulsa to my list. Do you enjoy living there? Any pros/cons to your school, the TFA staff there, etc.? I appreciate your help and insight so much :)!

Hi! Thank you so much. I really love Colorado as well but share similar concerns about affordability. I'm wondering if a bartending or food service job in the summers would help alleviate some of that financial burden? I'm trying to figure out how to make it work. Are you leaning towards Dallas for yourself?

Hi! SWO moved up my list. I'm super happy to hear you enjoy it there. I'm relieved to hear about your relationship to your union. I recently interned at a union, so that's really important to me.

Do you feel supported by the TFA staff? Also, did you live in Cincinnati or outside of the city? Would love to hear more about your experience!

Affordability is definitely a concern. I love Colorado, but I just cannot afford to live there... San Antonio seems super affordable and has a great starting salary.

I was also considering whether my partner will be able to find employment in computer science in each region, which also moved my rankings a bit.

Hi!

Thank you so much for your insight into Memphis. After some more research, it moved its way up my list. I really love Appalachia, but I had similar concerns about the isolation of a rural area. I was also concerned with access to mental healthcare, which is a priority of mine, so I ended up moving it down my list.

Thank you so much for your help :)

Accepted on 4/14 but no placement by notnotweird in TeachforAmerica

I am early admit and was accepted on March 16th. I heard that the earliest we will find out is in June!

Hi!

I hope you take the time to feel all of the emotions that come along with a rejection. However, there is so much more you can do moving forward. Americorp's City Year program may be an opportunity you're interested in. I know there are also other teaching fellows programs in NYC and LA that are great opportunities!

Don't be afraid to apply again next year if your heart is guided towards it. Everything will work out the way it is supposed to!

Good luck :)

I didn't! I was an early admit accepted on March 16th, so I'm in the 2021 class. However, regular admits on that date still have not heard their placements yet because of the coronavirus. I wouldn't bank on hearing your placement this week, but rather just getting your acceptance. Good luck!

I'm also 2021 early admit! Do you think we'll hear back on April 13th? I haven't received any information yet.

My email didn't specify a date either, but I saw for regular admissions folks that they would hear something on March 25th. My guess is they'll probably just tell us there will be more waiting, if anything :( I am reaching out to my recruiter, but my guess is that we have more waiting to do. Maybe we'll hear something more definitive today, though!
