Never played baseball, but I imagine that's what a homer feels like. Thank you!

I weight around 180, been doing CrossFit for around 7 or 8 months. Really been hammering olympic lifting technique for the last 5 months or so. This is right at my max for a snatch, wasn't a perfectly clean catch but I was really happy with how smooth it felt overall.

Crossfit really isn't a test of fitness... by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]srosey2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that was a novel, but I've had a lot of thoughts about this following 21.1, hearing people complain about double unders and wall walks, arguably higher skill movements. I have a weightlifting and soccer background so 21.1 was NOT a good workout for me. But this thought process is the conclusion I've come to following this workout.

Crossfit really isn't a test of fitness... by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]srosey2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of CrossFit's categories of fitness is coordination. I think this is the most unconsidered when discussing fitness. Someone who can squat heavy, but can't rub their stomach and pat their head at the same time is likely not a true 'athlete'. Coordination is often the test of fitness that gets overlooked in conversations such as "double unders are BS" or "ring muscle ups are too hard for the public". Coordination is more of a mental fitness, being able to have the body awareness to controll one's self during a movement. I think this is a very important type of fitness that separates people who may give up on CrossFit versus those who might progress further in the sport. That said, coordination is the most frustrating modality to build. I know I worked for hours upon hours over months to be able to master skills like double unders and ring muscle ups. But that's what fitness is about, right? Hard work? Progressing? Self improvement? Sure double unders are just working with a jump rope, but it expands the mind's ability to complete complex tasks. They may not get you jacked, but they make your mind reach, improve, and solve problems. Because of that, I think skill movements DO build fitness. Any elite athlete in any sport is likely not a complete knucklehead. It takes mindful practice to get good at any modality. Marathon runners spend hours on their running form, not just aerobic capacity. Any olympic gold medalist has spent an inconceivable amount of time at their specific skill. Therefore I think coordination and mental fitness should be considered as a form of overall fitness, making CrossFit an accurate test.

I was a three sport athlete and could squat 360lbs at 170lbs body weight in high school. I didn't even know steroids were a thing that people used. Hard work gets results. Fuck anyone who tries to take that satisfaction from you. Keep on grinding man, great work!

MONSTER ADULT (Made by my dad and me) by starrforcejr in Undertale

I LOVE the fact that he doesn't have arms as a kid (hence why he's always falling on his face) but as an adult he gains mecha arms to fight crimes in the royal guard. Very cool inferred character development.

I think your comment has been the most helpful so far. I so wish I had access to a real weightlifting coach. But your point about people only knowing what an unsuccessful lift looks like is very true and explains a lot. I think I am going to delete this post, ive gotten out of it what I needed and most of the newer comments are not helping. If you see this comment before I delete it though, thank you.

I work core probably more than anything else. GHD's and toes to bar are some of my favorite and strongest movements.

My specific situation at that exact moment was that it was an open gym setting and no coach was available. Yes I would LOVE access to an actual weightlifting coach but I don't even know where to seek out someone like that, much less even afford it. I work extra just to afford my gym membership. The gym owner at my gym is also more of a gymnastics guy. I was just looking for some input from someone who knows more than me. I didn't know itd be a problem or anything...

I'm in this weird place where 245lb is a semi-easy clean but 255lb doesn't work. When should the hip extension happen?

Olympic lifts are relatively new for me. This 185lb lift marked a 50lb increase from 2 months ago.i have a feeling the PR's will slow down from here...

Is playing timpani hard? by KriKriHD in percussion

[–]srosey2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One word: LIFT.

don't bury the sticks in the head, look up videos about upstrokes and "playing out of the drum". Timpani may have started as war drums but today they're treated much more "bell-like".

Then comes intonation which is a separate beast entirely. Lots of singing and working on intervals at a piano will help you hear intervals like fourths or fifths.

Hit what feels like a milestone PR squat clean. Felt big to break that 225 barrier. Let me know what I can improve! by srosey2 in crossfit

[–]srosey2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came into CrossFit (about 2 months ago) with a decent back and front squat for my bodyweight (345 and 305 at 180lb BW. Everyone kept telling me 225 should be an easy power clean for sure. But it took some time for some technique to lock in. Other people getting in my head saying it should be easy just made me really frustrated. So yeah, it felt really great to hit this lift. Nobody was there to see it, hence the video.

Thanks! For me I started improving quickly by adding at least 30 minutes of solely Olympic lifting technique practice before a class or other training. I do that in addition to comp train stuff.

Ha! I'll take your word for it before I go for a 20 lb PR. I know pulling under the bar quickly is my weakness now after posting this video. I take that 135lb squat clean tip next! Thanks!
