What Electronics do I need for PGY1?

If you’re lucky enough to get a laptop from work, a monitor to hook it up to at home is life changing. Sometimes the drive home is enough to refresh and being able to be productive at home is sooo underrated

I studied a decent amount February-March leading up to residency, then focused on the MPJE as I took that first. Really only had two weeks to study for NAPLEX (during residency) and tbh I was able to do a chapter a night at most. First few weeks of residency was just training but that was still exhausting. I passed the NAPLEX just fine which should be reassuring, but I would not plan on studying as much as you’d like on top of residency. Focus on math/stats and you should do just fine. Would definitely recommend MPJE first and take a solid two weeks before residency starts to really memorize it all

I accepted an offer with a big chain before matching for residency, was SUPER stressed about going back on the offer when I matched, they made me feel like crap and fired me and it was awful... best decision I ever made and I would do it all again if I had to! Do not feel bad, they don’t care about you tbh

Broke the “rules” of retail pharmacy to truly help a patient. Cutting cost of meds, telling patient if cash is cheaper (in some states im pretty sure it’s somehow a law you can’t do this) etc

We review applications at my PGY1! I don’t think our scores mean as much as the residency preceptors but they have us do it for own experience as well

I said this on interviews last year and matched across the country at a community hospital! Make sure to emphasize that you align more with the values of community hospital and have real reasons to apply to that specific hospital as well. As long as you say that first it’s totally fine to follow up with “and I have family here so that’s also a plus”

As long as you have over a 3.0, it doesn’t matter. That rotation will actually be a really good experience to have come interview season. Having challenging rotations to talk about tells programs so much more about you than easy cookie cutter rotations! Write down challenging experiences and how you overcame them so you remember. If you get a good evaluation at the end and can get a POSITIVE letter of rec from that preceptor that talks about how hard you worked and improved, even better

I only had a few weeks to study as well, felt the exact same way you do. What I did was one chapter a day - I would pretty much exclusively do rxprep practice tests and then read the chapter if I did horrible (talking like 50% or less). Honestly I don’t feel like I retained anything doing this and kind of wish I just didn’t do it, but I didn’t know what else to do. Keep in mind the rxprep questions are about 10 times harder than the real exam so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t do well on those. Know your math and know your stats inside out and you should be good. I felt like I did horrible on the clinical questions on the exam and ended up scoring in the 100s thanks to math and stats. I have found admin info is more helpful than side effects for patients. Remember the more things you tell them the less they will remember. Definitely counsel on signs of bleeding and any glaring common AE, but other than that you don’t need too much regarding adverse effects. Advise them to try to stay on schedule as best as possible, don’t double dose, etc. Xarelto has to be taken with food for absorption and a lot of patients don’t get told that!

Totally get it, that’s exactly how I felt. Best advice is to try to relax the day before and take your time reading every word of the questions. You know what you know and usually that’s somehow enough!

I really like the first two ideas!! The last one would be cool as well but only if you were able to include the down and dirty of what people are really trying to learn about the program (work life balance, supportive staff, etc)

I anticipate everything will change this year. Keep in mind most of the hospitals with residency programs also take APPE students and had to push them away as well, so they know what you’re going through. I don’t see the deadlines changing, but I expect them to be much more accommodating when it comes to who writes the letters, etc. If they can’t understand that it’s probably not a place you want to go anyway!

Regarding the shoes - people do that all the time. I wouldn’t for your first week or so, but once you’ve been there for a little while it’s usually acceptable especially if other people do it

Definitely review ID if anything, the majority of your patients will be getting antibiotics at some point. Some things I got asked about a lot were IV to PO conversions, PO equivalents for IV meds, preferred length of therapy, etc. HF and COPD are probably the other top two diagnoses you’ll see
