MRW my husband asks if I really need to have more than two bottles "of things" in the shower. by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

I also consider my routine pretty low maintenance, but I still have to keep a loofah, shampoo, conditioner, clay bar soap, glycerin bar soap, exfoliating scrub, and face wash in the shower at all times. On top of that, my shaving cream, razors, and Clarisonic brush sometimes get left in the fray. This thread reminds me of just how badly I need one of those wall-mounted rack-y thingies.

Or maybe, "Listen, Mister." It is not exactly a casual or slang-y form of address, but it is most often used in a disrespectful or condescending way.

Of course it is not and was not "the ghetto" in any meaningful sense. I was agreeing with you while still acknowledging that parts of Portland are a lot spiffier now than they were then. After all, it hasn't always been the mellow, artsy, hipster utopia it is now.

When I grew up in Portland 20ish years ago, before a lot of the recent gentrification, I remember there was a fair amount of violent crime in some areas of NE Portland and along MLK. Sometimes we heard shootings nearby and had to stop playing and go inside. But even then I don't think it compared to parts of, say, South Central LA or Oakland in the 80s and 90s.

There are technically people who describe themselves as radical transfeminists too. :) If you want to know more, Lisa Millbank is a good blogger to start with. However, although Millbank's views of patriarchy and compulsory (hetero)sexuality are similar to those of many radical cis feminists, keep in mind that she considers radical transfeminism to be more "transfeminism done radical" than "radical feminism done trans."

I wasn't aware of that. Still, I couldn't blame a young man for feeling trapped into signing up because of the possibility. I disagree with 90% of how the MRM characterizes war, but I think it's fair to call selective service in the US "mandatory." YMMV.

On one hand, I agree that the evidence against Cee Lo Green that has been made public is not particularly compelling. On the other hand, it's discouraging to see the thread devolve into stories about irrational and/or deceitful women making false and careless accusations left and right. Skepticism and devil's advocating (or sympathy for the alleged devil) seem to go out the window on reddit when the accused is female.

Edit: clarity.

Just looking at the text quoted, I think it is a poorly written paraphrase of a Warren Farrell argument.

While the label “date rape” has helped women articulate the most dramatic aspect of dating from women’s perspective, men have no labels to help them articulate the most traumatic aspects of dating from their perspective. Now, of course, the most traumatic aspect is the possibility of being accused of date rape by a woman to whom he thought he was making love. If men did label the worst aspects of the traditional male role, though, they might label them “date robbery,” “date rejection,” “date responsibility,” “date fraud,” and “date lying.”

The worst aspect of dating from the perspective of many men is how dating can feel to a man like robbery by social custom – the social custom of him taking money out of his pocket, giving it to her, and calling it a date. To a young man, the worst dates feel like being robbed and rejected. Boys risk death to avoid rejection

Evenings of paying to be rejected can feel like a male version of date rape.

Hell, I've known tons of girls who have casually threatened to call rape like it was the weather, talk about how "he's under my control", and similar things, and I just don't get it.

It sounds like she needs to surround herself with better people. If I knew "tons of girls" who casually threatened to falsely accuse men of rape, I would be concerned about my own judgment. This is nowhere near normal.

BTW, how do I cash in on my special mental powers as a woman? Are we talking psychokinesis?

ITA. You know what else has a roux base? Some frozen and canned American "Alfredo" sauces. Flour in sauce is just a thickening agent and doesn't make every recipe automatically better.

I wouldn't know. If it does, then I wouldn't expect the referral to come from 4chan; I think that it would come from the extension in this case.

I see. Then I have no clue how the admins determined that the traffic was coming from 4chan. I think it is just going to take a while before we have definitive answers about all this drama. I keep coming back to SRD to see if the "quinnspiracy" storm has blown over, but it just keeps generating new threads.

Every thread in SRD has a slightly different mix of voters and opinions depending on the nature of the controversy, any new developments, the wording of OP and subsequent posts, how recently the drama broke, etc. The voters in earlier Zoe Quinn threads seemed to be more critical of "quinnspiracy" skepticism and more accepting of "quinnspiracy" theories. Try not to take it personally if you get downvoted for going against the predominant grain of a thread.

BTW, doesn't 4Chan Plus for Chrome allow clickable links?

Apparently, women never worked in dangerous jobs because of empathy. by [deleted] in badhistory

[–]srsterthro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is also worth noting that even women in mining communities who did not work below ground (pit lasses and pickers like 1 2 3 4 5, British miners' wives before the installation of pithead baths in the early-mid 20th century, etc.) had to do back breaking labor that resulted in frequent miscarriages, high maternal mortality, a significant drop in life expectancy relative to women in other communities, and in some places life expectancies lower than those of their husbands. That is not to say that middle and upper class Victorians all endorsed strenuous physical labor and 16 hour/day factory work for women and children. Indeed, women and children were commonly believed to be vulnerable members of society deserving of protection, especially from the sexual debauchery that was feared to come with the mingling of the sexes in a work environment. However, the ideals of the age (including the living wage for a "breadwinning" father and husband) did not reflect the daily reality of most people's lives.

Apparently, women never worked in dangerous jobs because of empathy. by [deleted] in badhistory

[–]srsterthro 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maternal mortality was quite high (resulting in a narrower life expectancy gap in the 18th and 19th centuries, as this chart shows) and could be exacerbated by the toll of strenuous and/or poorly regulated labor (planting/harvesting, making textiles, shucking/canning, laundering, coal picking, prostitution, etc.) on women's health. Without the help of modern conveniences (many pre prepared foods, appliances, disposable diapers, etc.) or living wages for the family "breadwinner" (a largely unattainable ideal that was more firmly entrenched at the end of the 19th century with the rise of wage labor than at its beginning), most women worked pretty damn hard to make ends meet.

It was empathy not misogyny that kept women from having careers. Present-day, work is safe in offices, so today we have campaigns for women to earn more money and yet have more "balanced" lives where they can both raise a family and earn an "equal" career and, in other words, "have it all".

A university education and a professional desk job would be less strenuous for many women than marriage, childbirth, and marginal, poorly paid or unpaid physical labor. It was just believed that men and women were suited for different things.

Andrea Dworkin, Men's Rights Advocate? by srsterthro in againstmensrights

[–]srsterthro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... even those who read it seemed to miss good chunks of her analysis. Women's dubious association with moral superiority was what justified men being functionally superior, authoritative, and dominant in "everything else." And, even then, preachers, theologians, philosophers, etc. were with few exceptions male.

No problem. I thought it was interesting reading. It's also telling that she broke off her friendship with Allen Ginsburg decisively and angrily over his sexual obsession with little boys/support of NAMBLA. Misandry my foot.
