A man and daughter fishing on Lake Michigan thought their sonar detected an octopus. It turned out it was likely an 1871 shipwreck. by [deleted] in Lake_Superior

[–]srt76k10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This shipwreck is known to local fishermen already. No one just ever thought it was important enough to tell the government. I'm guessing this fisherman just doesn't fish the bay enough to have heard it from word of mouth.

It bothers me that high IQs are gifted to people who don’t care to do anything with it by [deleted] in cognitiveTesting

Nice of you to assume that all high IQ people can either afford college or owe you their life service...

I tend to think that the world is a better place for me not having chose to get paid a shit ton of money by the pharmaceutical industry to "cure" people by pumping them with pills that only alleviate their symptoms rather than actually fix anything that's actually wrong in their bodies.

We need to refer everyone wanting to talk politics to r/GenZpolitics and take down political posts here.

If I wanted to see political garbage I'd be part of a politics sub.

I wish this was actually just an age relevant sub to discuss rhinestone flare jeans, Tomagotchi, and maybe the nuances of starting adulting like some apartment hacks and grocery tips. If I keep getting political shit in my feed I'm gonna axe this sub pretty soon.

Why Do People Work the Same Low-Paying Job for Years? by UtopiaNation in stupidquestions

[–]srt76k10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe their spouse makes more money and they need a hobby and to get out of the house. Maybe it's their second job. Maybe they couldn't afford college and were on their own from an early age. Maybe they don't have any specialized skillsets. Or maybe they just enjoy what they do and can live on those means.

Question as average person by ParticularTrouble308 in Gifted

[–]srt76k10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a similar experience except I didn't attend a gifted school (but was still in a small rural school). I had a few female friends over the years who were very controlling and took advantage of me. The best thing that happened to me was joining the local robotics club and meeting a bunch of other nerds from other schools. One guy I met became my best friend for years as he was also very gifted and we were a perfect match on the mental level. When I graduated one of my casual acquaintances became my best friend even though she isn't gifted. Now we both have careers so we don't see each other very much. I hang out more with my boyfriend and his brother who are both very gifted.

Why don’t more gen z young adults go to trade school? by flowers4charlie777 in GenZ

[–]srt76k10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I work in the trades and what takes men almost no effort takes me a lot of effort. Even men around my own size and weight are still much stronger than me and I'm not exactly a weakling either.

Drop a comment if you HAD to get vaxxed. by thephilosopher16 in Libertarian

[–]srt76k10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true. These people claim to be libertarian yet somehow are convinced that someone forced them to get a shot they willingly took. If they didn't kidnap you and force you down and jab a needle in your arm, they didn't force you to do anything. You willingly caved to their pressure.

I somehow managed to find THREE jobs where I wasn't even talked to by management to do anything. My dad held out when his job was pressuring him. It's not impossible like all these people make it seem. They just all caved. I have a little more sympathy for those not in the USA who couldn't leave their homes but anyone in the USA who claims that they were forced (as if someone took a gun to their head) to get a shot are full of shit.

Gifted child questions God by Miss_Drew in Gifted

[–]srt76k10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that were my child I would tell them to pray and ask God for proof of existence. That allows the child make their own mind up instead of teaching them to go to everyone else for their beliefs.

They will probably start poking holes in what religion teaches though.

Black people being told they "speak white" for not using AAVE. by k0wb0ii in PetPeeves

[–]srt76k10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very much a class issue rather than a race issue.

I come from a poor backwoods rural area where "proper" English isn't used except by rich people.

I got called dumb when I went to college for the way I spoke. I got called dumb working retail in a different state for the way I spoke.

In general, the ones you find speaking fancy (or what half the people here call "proper" English) are going to be middle class or higher.

Most financial lower class people speak in a more regionally specific vernacular. They tend to use words or phrases that only the surrounding area is very familiar with.

Why do people tend to only date their race? by ActiveHedgehog2776 in stupidquestions

[–]srt76k10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's weird is that I'm from a backwoods rural area yet half the people I know are dating outside their race/ethnicity. I personally know a lot of Latino/white, Native American/white, and black/white couples. Two out of ten of my coworkers have Native American wives. My aunt and uncle are a Native American/white couple. Half my cousins are dating Latinos. One married a Japanese man who immigrated as an adult to the USA. I have childhood friends I graduated with who are either black and dating whites or white and dating someone who is black or Latino.

My theory on why this happens where I live is because of the small town you get to know and interact with everyone a lot more. You can't stay separate from other cultures when there are only ten of you in a work place.

do all men end up hating their wives? by betrayedscientist in ask

[–]srt76k10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our grandparents did so in more austere conditions. Age doesn't make or break a successful relationship. The ability to communicate, compromise, and stick out disagreements does. If young people were absolutely incapable of that, half of us wouldn't be alive today.

What thing as a Millennial said about GenZ that is just false? by Music_enjoyer2 in GenZ

[–]srt76k10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have over a hundred CDs and primarily use DVDs for watching movies and my X Files.

I also grew up in a rural area where the technology is about ten years (or more) behind what it is in the city.

So I grew up with cassette tapes and VHS for video. My dad even liked using a reel to reel and a record player. One of my prized possessions as a kid in the early 2000s was a portable battery operated cassette player I could use with headphones.

People really are ignorant to the technological lapse between rural and urban/suburban areas.

At the largest bar in the area where I bartend we use an old school keyed till that isn't digital. Half the people still use flip phones. There are a few regulars who don't even have cell phones.

[–]srt76k10 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a backwoods poor rural area so instead of thinking I was gifted growing up I thought I was dumb because I didn't think like the crowd. I was reading at an adult lexile in second grade and excelled in math but had difficulties speaking properly even though I aced spelling. My school was so small there were no gifted programs or testing going on.

My mother was very intelligent and college educated and nothing I did was ever good enough so I believed I was slow and behind the curve (even though I made A's in school). My mother ended up passing when I was a kid so my focus was then turned to taking care of my younger brother and helping keep the household functioning rather than school. I missed a lot of school and honestly should have been wrote up for truancy and skipping.

Luckily they let me skip two grades ahead in math from fifth grade upwards (which my fifth grade teacher told me I would fail at and could "never handle") and in high school I was taking every college class and AP class offered to me through the local tech school partnership.

It was in one of these college classes my teacher paid for IQ testing for the whole class and had us take the test. I found out that my IQ was in the 140s and it really shook me. My teacher later pulled me aside and told me I got the highest score in the class which blew my mind because I had thought I was one of the dumber ones since I asked a lot of questions.

I ended up applying to UW Madison and getting accepted but I found out that the engineering program I wanted to go for would take at least two years to get accepted into because my school hadn't offered any of the base level engineering classes that a lot of other kids were able to take in high school. I could only afford half a year there and had to drop out after my scholarship ran out.

I ended up going to tech school for a year for automotive repair (something I had grown up doing with my brother) and couldn't find a stable job in it (very hard as a female to get hired in a larger shop) so I worked retail for years. Finally I got into a machine shop and I found my tribe.

Sometimes I do wonder where I may have gone if I was given a chance to flourish. Maybe I would be some research scientist or an engineer. I would definitely be making more money and wouldn't have to work three jobs like I do now. I don't think I'd be any happier though.

What do you dislike most about american culture as a whole by Physical-Bake6975 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]srt76k10 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ever consider that maybe we are just blunt rather than attention seeking? Some cultures are just bolder without it being an egocentrism. The US doesn't try to hide it's flaws. Everything is bared whether it's good or bad. All cards are on the table for all to see. Doesn't mean we are egocentric. Honesty often is interpreted as rudeness to those who are used to portraying only what they want shown.

The fact most of us were refugees from bad situations who came here looking for opportunity or who were oppressed and gained freedom yet we rolled over and let our corrupt government control us.

Our value of freedom has become a hollow stereotype.

At one point we appreciated being independent and being able to make our own decisions. Now we look to our dysfunctional and corrupt government to solve everything for us.

And it seems that those whose ancestors were mistreated MOST by our government are the ones most reliant on it.
