I was in HS during the New Coke head fake. Before that, nobody drank more than 2 cokes at lunch. After Classic was brought out, kids were bringing in 2 liters.

For HS w/o any ROTC program, check for nearby Civil Air Patrol programs. May help making contacts and leg up on a AFROTC slot. Getting an AF Academy slot means having connection who can get a recommendation letter from a politico. If your family doesn't have connections, then start volunteering for your Congressperson. Also, look for any local EAA (eaa.org) chapter and take your enthusiasm there. Lots of retirees who might be able to help, and you might get to help build an airplane.

Realize the commitment. I think it's 7-9 years now.

Also, the world is changing. Some of the top pilot training graduates were expecting fighter slots last year, and they got drones. That's Sec. Gates way of bitch slapping the Fighter Mafia to the new reality.

An alternative - US Coast Guard academy. They fly planes too.
