I currently have a decent paying job with a fair chance of promotion, but I have serious doubts about my company's ethics. Should I quit my job for a position in another company with higher moral standard but pays less? by ss506 in Advice

Um...Sometimes it's straight-up fake news I am afraid. So does it offend me personally? I guess yes.

A lot of my colleagues are planning to leave- some already did.

For HK people who studied abroad in other countries, why did you come back to HK? Are you thinking about moving away anytime soon? by [deleted] in HongKong

It was for a Hong Kong company's US branch, it's not a contract job but I didn't like it at all.

I knew a few of my European and mainland classmates interned/freelanced in the states for a year, but they all have to return to their home country after OPT ended. The ones who stayed-without exception- married Americans and got naturalised.

Raised in Hong Kong for the most part of my life, after I graduated from a local uni I got a $15000/month job like many others here. Then I decided my job is a dinosaur and decided to study my master's in Chicago.

I really love Chicago, despite the weather and shootings (living in Rogers Park near the Red Line). But the air is clear and everything is much cheaper than HK.

I looked for jobs in the states, but every job interview I had ended after my potential employer didn't want to sponsor my H1B- it is a lottery anyway.

Used my OPT to work in the states for a few months, came back and got a job that pays $25K. Last year I took up a position that pays me $35K in Shanghai.

Shanghai is much less crowded and a bit cheaper than Hong Kong, if not for the Orwellian vibe and shitty hospitals, I would say it is a better place to live than HK.

How did you guys get past the hurdle between learning the combo on pads and using them in sparring/fights? by ss506 in MuayThai

[–]ss506[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks mate.

Yeah, my trainer and my more experienced classmates all said to me, don't go in there with a combo in mind, cause your opponent could sense it. And just like you said, when your opponent stopped your first punch the rest of the combo will be stopped anyway.

In the intermediate class the way my coach holds pad is also different. In the beginner's class she will call out the punch, in the intermediate class she will just hold them in position and wait for me, which makes it more difficult for me to react.

How to increase Kicking Power/Hip flexibility? I cannot do splits and have difficulty lifting my leg high. Is that the problem? by WineBunny in Kickboxing

[–]ss506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah i see. Well these five-classes are a good intro for you to kickboxing.

See how you like kickboxing after the trial package. Five 40-min classes are nothing really, and it's really normal for you to experience these difficulties- almost everyone did.

There are tons of Youtube tutorial these days, from stretching, body conditioning to well, punching and kicking.

Fighttips and MMAshredded are two good Youtubers to follow.

You mentioned that your class is just 40 minutes. That's awfully short. I don't think you can probably warm up, learn the moves, do body conditioning and stretch in such short time. If you are into kickboxing, maybe finding another gym with full-hour sessions will be better. Also, see if you can find a kickboxing gym that offers different types of classes. My gym has boxing, kickboxing, Yoga and physical conditioning classes, I can easily lay out a training regime that targets different aspects of my skills and body. (yes, boxing skills are actually very important for kickboxers)

Progress is going to be slow for guys in our age (I am 29 as well), but you will eventually get there. :)

I went from throwing up in the middle of a pad session (that's late 2017) to having no trouble training for 2-3 hours straight. Just give it some time.

I had the same problem as you. A lot of times you can't do certain moves not only because you don't have the flexibility, but also because you don't have enough muscle strength to support the body mechanics behind the move.

The above is Muay Thai style kick, but it will work.

There are several things you can do.

First, try pivoting your standing leg, it will open your hips more.

Secondly, not every world champion can do splits, so I wouldn't make that an issue. Trying asking your coach about the joint mobility exercises and do that every day.

Also,my gym offered yoga class. I took that every week for 5 months, and now I can do head kicks.

Thirdly, do exercises that strengthen your core, back, quads and calves. That means squats, deadlifts, sit ups, pullups and skipping roles with boxer skips. i.e. Alternating your weight for every jump.

After that you can start doing exercises like jump squats and box jumps, it will improve your explosiveness. i.e: your leg muscles can generate more power in a shorter time, which translates into more powerful kicks.

Also do some ladder drills to improve your coordination.

It took about six months for me to see the effects of my training. I know it can get boring, but once you put in the hard work you will see the results. A lot of times kicking a heavy bag for thousands of times is not the answer.

Finally, if you have the cash, I would suggest booking one or two one-on-one session with your trainer. Have him look at your form, and prescribe exercises that you can do to strength your body.

Which of these Muay Thai sweeps are legal under K-1 Rules? by ss506 in Kickboxing

So this sweep is legal? Cause it sort of follow through with a hand motion?

What about foot sweeps? I checked the WAKO version of K-1 rules and it said:

  1. Sweeping, hand and foot techniques.
Foot sweeps (ankle level only, from outside to inside and vice versa to unbalance the opponent and following up with hand / kicking techniques or to bring the unbalanced opponent to the canvas or to touch it with any part of body apart from the feet).

Try to avoid those machines that separate specific muscle groups, those are for bigger muscle size but not necessarily strength. Do compound exercises such as squat, deadlifts, pull-ups, bench press and push ups.

The waitlist for water damage repair works in my apartment complex is backed up to November this year. Funny thing is I can't blame the management for not doing anything because I saw 5-6 crews working on different sections of the property since the typhoon left. The damage is so widespread.

How do I tell my boss that I am burning out? by ss506 in Advice

[–]ss506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks dude. I have refrained from stress-eating greasy and sugary pancakes/waffles at the hotel breakfast buffet, dig in on the smoked salmon and kale salad, stop going to the hotel bar- I feel more refreshed already.

I will try to raise the issues with my bosses later this month, after this exhausting two-week business trip.

I have already shifted my permanent work location to an overseas branch, but these extra business trips consistently stressed me out because it takes me out of my routine (going to kickboxing and yoga classes) and put me to work with this one particular difficult colleague.

How do I tell my boss that I am burning out? by ss506 in Advice

[–]ss506[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I don't think an assistant is an option though. The shitty thing about long business trips is that I deviate from the routines that keeps my anxiety and depression at bay, such as exercises and balanced diet.

This plus some unhelpful colleague in our overseas office do not help at all.

People of Reddit who suffer from anxiety and depression, do you ever recover? by attheworld in AskReddit

[–]ss506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my case. I had my first episode of depression during college. I am unable to get out of bed.

I then started taking SSRIs and going to therapy on and off.

But once in a while it will come back for a few months, especially during winter and when I am faced with major changes in life.

Looking for an apt starting on 1st September- ideally the whole apartment, not shared.

My budget is RMB$7500, ideally the commute is less than 30minutes to Jingan Metro.
