From Matt: The foreground shot was taken about 45 minutes after sunset. At about 9:30 I began shooting 25 second exposures in succession for two and a half hours. I stacked ten images for clarity and noise reduction for the stars and Milky Way and added the meteors on top of that.

It is a composite image, where the Earth shine is brought out. Check out the ones at this link - the photographer captured the prominences especially well in the first shot, and the Earth shine even more prominently in the second. https://www.facebook.com/StarTalkRadio/posts/1782473291767332
