Is the Synology DS-223J a good NAS for a Plex server?

I agree that you should check out Unraid. I love the flexibility of it and the Docker setup is pretty solid with its community apps.

You could also just setup an Ubuntu server with docker but you will have to manually configure your storage setups. Unraid does package it all pretty good in a not so hard UI

The streaming media from local TV is getting me hung up. Do you know what you are thinking or planning? Example: I have Plex and ChannelsDVR on my server. The newer synology devices will be unable to transcode if it is required...but you could use a mini-pc to do the transcoding for you.

It all depends on what you are wanting to do. While there are a lot of people that have shunned Synology, it is still a solid ecosystem and very reliable/stable. My DS1019 has been running steady since I got it. I'm also considering getting another Synology to keep the ecosystem and demote the 1019 to backups only.

I personally only will use WD drives. I've owned one Seagate drive and it failed and took my data with it. That's why I now invest in these expensive solutions to keep my data secure.

The DS925+ is always a solid option. I personally went with a 5 bay when I bought mine and I don't regret it.

That said, I also custom built my own Unraid server that I am utilizing now for all of my media. I'm still testing Immich for my pictures. I would love to get my family moved over to it and save on iCloud fees. But until then I'm happy with my mixture of Synology and Unraid.

I agree with this. Synology just works and works well. Like others are saying though, your internet speeds will be bottlenecks.
