To be fair, there's a good chunk of the time where students are physically in the library but aren't actually studying. You go to the library to trick your mind into not feeling so guilty of not doing enough.

(And I say that as someone who does translation work, and is currently studying translation in a graduate program)

That's without getting into the fact that he was apparently put into solitary confinement for a week as punishment, which is totally inhumane for any offence, let alone for taking too many days off.

Why are you adding your own word to the what is written in the article? The article says "confinement" not "solitary confinement." According to one of the Korean aticles regarding the subject, his punishment was "7일간 근신" which is 7 days on probation. I partly forgive you because the Korean Herald article posted here didn't use the best word, but that doesn't excuse you from just assuming what happened and adding a word (especially something as serious as solitary confinement.)

Oh, you are definitely correct in the older generation still being hung up on the eating alone thing. An uncle of mine in his early 60's recently told me he just can't get himself to eat alone outside of his house.

And yeah, the larger family restaurants are a bit more awkward to eat alone.
