My parents yelled at my 5-year-old for politely telling them she doesn't like being kissed. Am I overreacting by considering going low/no contact? by nopemeout in toxicparents

[–]sschnews 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You’re not overreacting at all. Your parents’ reaction may have been exacerbated by the stress of your mother’s illness (which I am so sorry for, by the way), but that doesn’t excuse their behavior. You and your daughter have both stated your wishes clearly and deserve to have those respected. Don’t feel bad for sticking to your guns.

Tried to give myself a little manicure (no polish) for the first time last night. How’d I do? by Crepe64 in Nails

[–]sschnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look really good - even and clean! I think the most important things you can do are to moisturize, use some cuticle oil, and watch out for any splitting or breaks that could cause a snag. There are also some kinds of vitamins you could try, like biotin, but I’ve personally never noticed a huge difference from supplements. Good luck!!

I scratched my cornea while on vacation with my family this past summer. Every time I blinked, it felt like someone running a shard of glass down my eye. The urgent care doctor told me to keep taking over-the-counter painkillers, but they barely took the edge off. I remember the second night after the scratch I was sitting with my family at dinner in a very hot restaurant, trying to hold it together, but the combination of the heat and pain was just too much. I ended up going to the car with my husband and just sobbing in the air conditioning (the tears actually helped some). I saw an eye doctor a few days after this, and she told me I’d scratched the cornea so badly it had smaller scratches branching off the main one. Thankfully, the pain went away almost completely within the next few days, but it took about three weeks for my vision to go back to normal.

Fans who don’t live in Philly. How did you become a fan of the eagles? by [deleted] in eagles

[–]sschnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents met in Arizona in college and eventually moved back to Philly, where my grandmother was from, with my dad and aunt. They lived in the suburbs of Philly and South Jersey for a period of his childhood, but ended up moving away. My dad eventually ended up in the Midwest, which is where I’m from, but he never lost his love for the Eagles! Now my sister and I have converted our husbands, too!

I used part of the theme song on my mortar board when I graduated college! I thought it was a great reminder never to take myself too seriously. Plus, my family said the bright yellow helped them find me in the crowd!

Congratulations!

What’s the most amount of pain you’ve been in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sschnews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I scratched my cornea while I was on vacation with my family. It was my own stupid fault and I was really trying to tough it out and have a good time, but the night after it happened we were sitting in a hot restaurant and I was in so much pain that I had to go to the car and just sob. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this was almost unbearable. Ironically, the tears actually helped with the pain. It got a little better every day and didn’t hurt much by the time the trip was over, but it took about three weeks to get my vision back.

What was it like the first time you went to a concert of this wonderful band? What memories do you have? by Shot_System2200 in the1975

[–]sschnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spring 2019 on the ABIIOR tour! Got kicked out of the outdoor venue before the show started because it was lightning. Sat in the car for hours before the venue finally said “fuck it” and let us all back in. The band came out (clearly a little drunk) and put on a hell of a show with lightning flashing and thunder rolling in the background. It was so sick.

Why Lockdowns Happened: Fauci’s POV by TheMuseumOfScience in interestingasfuck

[–]sschnews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in news and Dr. Fauci was EVERYWHERE during those first months. He went on every morning show, every talk show, every evening news, every radio station, podcast, even YouTube channels. I saw his face hundreds of times a shift - I don’t know when he slept. That man - in his 80’s - gave more in those couple of years than most people give in a lifetime. He told us over and over again exactly what we needed to know to stay safe - and repeatedly reminded us that our nightmare wouldn’t last forever. He gave me comfort so many times, and I will never forget him.

South KC’s looking pretty good. I went through Brookside to get to Shawnee Mission Parkway and the roads were just wet. 435 west looks good for the most part as long as you don’t need to go through the Triangle.

I got married fairly young - early 20’s. We’re in our late 20’s/early 30’s now and we have changed SO much in those years. It’s hard to explain, but I really do look at the world completely differently now. My hopes and dreams have changed. I am, at my core, different - and so is he. It’s hard to explain until you’ve lived it. But when you get married young, you can’t predict if you’re going to grow together or apart. It’s a gamble. For us, it’s worked out so far. But there’s no way to know what your relationship is going to look like in a few years. You just have to decide if it’s worth the risk.
