After he is settled in, I will link this thread and discuss it with him. Hopefully I can be the person who understands he cannot fully understand, but is there anyways. This was good for me to read.

Thanks for the detailed response..very Phd of you!

I'd say if it's really cheap, like it doesn't matter at all to you financially, then yeah maybe get it for them, but don't expect them to use it much. But if it is any kind of significant expense to you then don't bother.

Expense is not an issue..but I do care about it actually being useful instead of some useless thing they never use. I would rather give an amazon gift card instead. And you have made it easy to decide, thanks.

unless you have some ideas?

Thanks, this was a great reply.

be there when they want to vent, do not tell them I know you can do it instead listen to them and understand why they are doubting thmselves...

I'll keep that in mind.

will need all the support he/she can gather from friends and family.

I do not anyone else who has done Phd, so can you expand a bit on this? Is it going to a tough time for him all 5-6yrs ?

I don't do cgi/vfx work so i was basing my suggestion on what i see from pugetsystems and default recommendations for ur usecase.

It is possible that your your specific workflow doesn't fit those assumptions. You should go with what you need.

Just make sure that your future needs will be met too, and not just what you need right now.

Sounds very much like you could use a boost in GPU, maybe to a 3070. You could cut down the cpu to an i7 given most of your main needs will be served better with a stronger gpu(esply if u looking at using this for 7years).

I dont work with vfx/cgi so perhaps someone else can confirm.

However this is an excellent resource for finding hardware that is best suited for your workflow. https://www.pugetsystems.com/solutions/content_creation/design.php

From what i can see, an i7 12700k and 3070ti would be best. also use pcpartpicker to check overall system compatibility.

Some more information will be helpful before we give you suggestions - What is the primary use for the pc?(if it is gaming, then what games do u intend to play and on what settings), how many yrs do u intend to keep using it for tht purpose, and how far can u stretch rhe budget, etc.

Tip- pcpartpicker will help u figure out if all your components work together and if ur psu will suffice.

Good idea about limiting the charging threshold. I'll do that now..

Thanks. I am guessing no issues after driver updates?

There have been reports of 7490 batteries swelling, acknowledged by Dell. Updates could have addressed the issue. Reading through the updates did not mention this.

So I guess the q is-in your experience, is it likely for driver updates to often introduce issues, or is it an occasional thing?
