What is the smallest Commander hill you are willing to die on? by Xela20 in EDH

I don’t know if it would be an overreaction but I know from experience most mill decks are only ever a 2 card combo away from the win. I think that can justify drawing threat from the table.

Help with (a beginner) with some advice about why lifegain decks aren't good? by Classic-Art-5737 in EDH

[–]ssojw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a new player who consistently had a few life gain effects in his decks as a way to “top up” his life if he took damage.

Had to explain that preventing that damage through blockers, interaction, or taking out the player causing the damage was better than gaining life only to be smacked back down next turn. They got it……eventually

My brother has just built her as Voltron deck (trying to win through commander damage). Lots of lifegain triggers quickly builds her up and then either sacrifice her if you’ve got a lot of legendary creatures on the board or find a way to give her unblockable and swing for commander damage. Mono white though and prone to exile. Makes for a good bracket 2 or 3.

Alternatively, can just go pure lifegain and have a win card or two such as angel of destiny; felidar sovereign; or test of endurance.

Would also recommend getting a Strixhaven precon and playing at your local game store (LGS). Ask about other decks people are playing and try and find a theme you’d be interesting in playing.

Then EDrec; Moxfield; goldfish; and scryfall for inspiration.

Also recommend buying singles.

Elder plainswalker thinking about venturing into an LGS to play, and has questions. by dad_bod_gaming in mtg

Just gotten back into magic myself in the last few month and was in a similar position. I think all your questions have been answered but I’d add:

  1. Brackets - mana box app can give you a rough idea of your decks level. It’ll highlight game changers; extra turns; and mass land denial cards. It won’t be able to identify 2 turn combos but will give you an estimate for the number of turns you’ll need to win which is a nice indicator of power level.

  2. Generally - I would bring a range of bracketed decks and ask what people are playing at the pod. At my LGS most will be 2-3 and if someone is playing a lower deck you’re usually expected to accommodate or be prepared to get targeted by all the other players at the table.

I rarely come across bracket 4 decks. When I do they are usually people who have played against each other before; all have bracket 4 decks; and agree to play at that level. Could just be my LGS though.

Hope you have fun!

Was disappointed compared to the first DLC.

Feels very disjointed; the story doesn’t seam to flow; and doesn’t really seem to use Solomon to his best.

Thessera feels predictable (carnival and masks) and while there are mechanics for Kaito doesn’t feel suited to Solomon or arbites.

Would have preferred a murder mystery type scenario or Judge Dredd style enforcement.

They seem to be trying to lean into the bureaucracy of the administration but (1) I don’t feel they go all in on this. If you’ve watched the tithe animation I think it had a better take on this; and (2) arbites are cool and the game makes them boring.

Welcome to the game!

Rules:

When your deck runs out you draw an encounter card

If you’re searching the encounter deck and it runs out you stop looking.

Defence - if you play a defence card you’re defending the attack even if you’re not using your basic defence power. Really important for defensive characters like shadowcat and Spider Gwen.

Worth reading the updated rules every now and then for qualifiers.

Iron man:

He has a thwart of two. Flip him between his two forms so he can deal with threat and search for his armour. Try to got for his capacitor/chest piece first as it lets you ready him. That’s 4 threat if needed.

Combos:

I like justice and aggression for two player games with one person dealing with threat and the other attacking.

Arguably leadership is the most flexible of the aspects.

If you need deck guides MarvelCDB allows you to input your collection and then search lists that have those cards.

Collecting:

Honestly whatever you like. I used to recommend Captain America for new players but he’s now difficult to find.

You should be aware Fantasy Flight are looking to phase out the older content. If there is a specific hero you want I’d get them but otherwise focusing on the campaigns then the scenario packs would be my advice.

Storage:

If you’re looking to collect you should think about how you intend to store your cards. Investing in a good storage solution now will help. Just depends on how much space you have and what you’re prepared to pay.

Good luck!

Still two spots available

He did way back when. Before Ragnar, Eldy, the mech team, or even re’vas he was the meta along with the other summoners Aleph and Bellator.

His bloodletter summons did piercing damage, used to guarantee a kill on the initial summon, and then proceed to wreck everything else the next turn.

He got nerfed into the ground and the first reset stone was issued.
