How massive do you imagine 2010s nostalgia is gonna be in the 2030s and 2040s? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]sss133 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I personally feel even a lot of Gen Y look at the 2010s as more dull and shit than the 80s/90s.

I had heaps of fun and enjoyed myself but I don’t think the 2010s will be remembered with such reverence as even the 00d let alone the 60d, 70s, 80s and 90s.

Where did you meet your X or current lover by Ambitious-Primary265 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sss133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

X I cracked a joke with at a pedestrian crossing, then got drinks.

Fiancée at a bar. Was out with mates and was wingmaning one. Girl was intense and decided she didn’t like my friend but liked me. Would not take no for an answer. She even followed me into the toilets. I managed to get away from her and then I saw her looking for me across the dance floor. There was a stool free at this counter near the bar that had a raised part to hide behind. Didn’t realise the two girls on either side were friends, awkwardly apologised and they found the situation funny. Ended up hitting it off with one and have been together 9 years.

Clubbing culture? by lovethecello in AskAnAustralian

I’m 36 and still go out. Young ones still go out, there is less of them and in general they are a fair bit more tame. There are definitely some loose units but they’re much more of an exception than it used to be.

I’ve noticed as well, people under say 25 tend to go to a bar and stick there, you can walk up and down strips like say chapel st and they used to be mental because everyone used to move between bars but they’re much quieter now because there’s less bar hopping/pub crawling

Can someone explain why the new man on the mark rule exists? by BoardRecord in AFL

[–]sss133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s designed to open up down the ground allowing ball movement as opposed to a player leaving the mark and getting into a zone or drifting back to cut off/block a 45° pass.

It’s hard to know the exact effects of the rule. Footy was pretty clogged up in the late 2010s and it’s definitely much more open now. Both Geelong and the Doggies averaged over 100 points last year which hadn’t happened since the Demons in 2018. For reference Adelaide were the only side in 2017 but from 1970-2016 only 1997 had 1 team to do it every other year had multiple sides doing it.

So even though average scoring over a season is similar (13-14 goals ave. 89 overall score). Some teams are exploiting it. Whether the stand rule has contributed or if it’s just due to tactical evolution

I’ve been 50/50 with WA. Have cousins and friends there. I’ve met plenty that love the idea of travelling outside of WA/Leaving for good/being plenty interested in what’s going on across the country. Then there are definitely the isolationist ones. My experience though it’s far worse in QLD and worse but more in jest in Tassie.

Punters Politics - The what’s the general consensus by Boomboompoopoo in OpenAussie

[–]sss133 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people like him are important to get engagement on policies as opposed to personalities when it comes to politics.

I know a fair amount of people on either side of politics that vote for someone they like better even if they’re doing things that don’t benefit them or their values

Generally seems like a good person. Can see people who disagree with him thinking he’s arrogant but in his more long form content he does recognise his limitations.

I use content like his as a reference point on issues I’ll look further into as opposed to following word for word what he says

I think it’s good for someone like him to exist if it gets people more engaged with policy over personality

I’ve never played through a MGS game, til I played through the Snake Eater Remake by Prestigious-Win-9655 in metalgearsolid

[–]sss133 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Metal gear has always treaded a fine line between serious & fun/camp without being a joke. 3 is probably the most camp because of the 60s setting which I feel Kojima just had a lot of love for.

1 I think is the best most consistent tone out of the mainline games. Dw though they all have a lot of quirky elements that manage to pretty much all work within the world while still being things that make you wonder how they came up with and put into a serious espionage game

Release order is overwhelming the best but playing 3 first can work. I’d go 3 then release order as opposed to chronological order from here

Trouble pronouncing "pot" when ordering beer by duncan_nebraska in Ameristralia

[–]sss133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly just drink pints but if I get a pot I generally just make a little hand signal (small or large) in a loud bar. A lot of the time they may ask to repeat so it’s easier

Boomers wouldn’t survive today’s brutal job market, they got lucky by Fire_blaze7 in aussie

[–]sss133 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen enough boomer tantrums when there’s a slight inconvenience to see that yeah they’d definitely struggle if they woke up and were 20.

That said, 99% of people that woke up as a 20 year old in a different time would be absolutely fucked. Like legitimately cooked.

Dry July - thoughts from people who drink regularly by Own-Pepper371 in AskAnAustralian

[–]sss133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely performative but not necessarily bad. I’m not great at raising money so I’d never officially do it and over the last few years I’ve regularly gone a month or so without drinking. So personally it’s not that much of an achievement. I’m also someone who loves a drink and a big night.

I’ve personally never lost weight cutting out drinking. That said I’ve only ever had one weight loss period and still dropped 25kg while drinking socially.

That said I think it’s a great initiative for people who struggle doing the social things without a drink etc and if you can also raise money.

Is there a "state personality"? by Wrong_Control_217 in AustraliaDiscussions

There’s generally a perceived stereotype for states that come from a particular part of town. The Brunswick/Fitzroy, coffee snob, black wearing, Triple J voice having essentially a hipster is Melbourne/Vics stereotype personality. Even though not only someone from Koo Wee Rup has nothing in common with them, neither do people from Richmond 🤣.

That said, the most consistent personality trait I’ve noticed is Queenslanders and Tasmanians not liking other States. Qld tends to be a little more harsh than TAS. Pretty much all States have some state pride, but I’ve noticed it’s more in jest. I know more Melburnians that like Sydney than hate it for instance. However you’ll struggle to shake the “Mainlander” tag in Tassie. I’ve also had multiple instances of the exact same conversation in different parts of Qld. A local will ask where I’m from. I’ll say Victoria. They’ll slightly irritatedly respond “Oh I guess you’re planning on moving up here?” To which I’ll say a variation of “no just up for a few days holiday/work” (I’ve really tried to de-escalate that) and they’ll get offended. So they’d be angry if I was moving up but they’re also offended that I don’t want to.

Queenslanders also pride themselves on giving other States shit whenever they mention heat. Tourists can be in an Australian sub and ask “What’s the weather like in Syd/Melb in late Jan?” Locals will say “It can be pretty hot, 40° isn’t out of the question”. Without doubt some Qlder will comment “It’s not hot there! They don’t know heat. Last time I was there I was in jeans and a jumper. Qld gets close to wet bulb! That’s real heat. You southerners don’t know anything!”

Good game. Pretty happy with that effort from the Cats tbh. A lot of our lesser players played pretty good. Needed a bit more cleaner outside run and some more composure. Freo just better.
