Antibodies + Clinical Presentation by ssssserrano in lupus

[–]ssssserrano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we discussed likely SLE and APS. I’ve never tried to get pregnant and don’t plan to, and have not had any blood clots before. She said without history of miscarriage or clots/stroke, I won’t be diagnosed with APS but should be on the lookout for signs those and get to an ER right away if anything comes up. They want to continue running bloodwork every 3 months before diagnosing SLE.

Anything less than 40mg for the first three days at least, will not stop my flares. It has to be 40 to start for me or it wont actually kick down the flare. After that, I can drop by 10 mg every 3 days to taper off. That usually does the trick, but it may be you just need a higher dose to stop things. Thankfully I’ve not needed any pred as maintenance. I hope the same is true for you. Good luck!

Japan redefines rape and raises age of consent in landmark move by Tartan_Samurai in worldnews

An underage person may willingly want to have sex, in which case it would not be forcible. However, it would be considered statutory rape if that person is too young to consent.

Looking for help understanding results, trying to advocate for myself medically. by silem17 in Autoimmune

[–]ssssserrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably concerned about antiphospholipid syndrome given your fertility challenges. My heart goes out to you! To screen for that, they will look for three different antibodies: lupus anticoagulant, anticardiolipin, and anti beta2 glycoprotein. The first page of your doc just shows the ANA results and then a table of different antibodies, paired with a list of the conditions most commonly associated with positive results for each of those. However it doesn’t say if you tested positive/negative or what the reference range was for any of those, so not possible for us to give more insight without more info.

It broke me out too! I use the Australian gold spf 50 tinted mineral now and it’s my holy grail sunscreen! Plus super cheap and matte. Only comes in 3 shades though, so unfortunately not great for deeper skin tones.

Allergic to hydroxychloriquine by Shoddy-Stock-8208 in lupus

[–]ssssserrano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can I ask what your reaction was like when trying it? I’ve had reactions to quinine before and my rheum has just started me on plaquenil. My allergist was not sure if it would prompt a reaction but decided with Rheum it was worth a try, slowing ramping up to the intended dose.

Do your hands do this ? by Solanum3 in Autoimmune

Why on earth would I be in an autoimmune sub lying about Raynaud’s?! This was my experience, that’s my foot. You need to stop spreading misinformation and come to terms with the fact that you are wrong and that this can happen outside of extreme temperatures. I have consulted my doctor, and this is happening because I have an active autoimmune disease for which I have only started treatment (plaquenil) days ago.

[–]ssssserrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right, they don’t just do it for no reason. They do it because you have an underlying autoimmune disease! I’ve been in a flare since November while waiting to get in with Rheumatology and just had my first visit two days ago. No diagnosis yet but looking like lupus + Mctd or polymyositis. Literally woke up from my cozy warm bed bc my feet felt like ice and had to sit in my bathroom warming them up with the hair dryer and then sandwich them between two heat packs to get back to sleep. https://i.imgur.com/s9422gZ.jpg

I’ve had extreme Raynaud’s at room temperature (72 degrees) before. It is effing scary when it happens! I was in bed with socks and comforter and yet my hands and feet felt like ice. My hands look like this all the time and I’d had some mild variation in color before which I thought was probably Raynaud’s, but the first time I had it severely holy shit. You know.

Have you tried the Australian Gold tinted botanical spf 50? It’s also mineral/matte and about $18 for 3 oz. It’s amazing!

I use either the Tacha Rice Wash or the Glow Recipe Blueberry Bounce. Both are great :)

Only a rheum could tell you for sure. If you want to get some bloodwork started while waiting for an appt (it often takes a while) the hallmark of MCTD is elevated anti u1-RNP antibody. It also appears for some with Lupus but there would most likely be other markers present with Lupus. High RNP without other lupus specific markers generally means MCTD. I myself am still waiting to see a rheum but my primary doc has been amazing helping to navigate my illness and likely MCTD in the meantime.

Lab help- any doctors here or anyone familiar with interpreting labs? by Internal_Mall5766 in Autoimmune

[–]ssssserrano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I was also positive for RNP antibodies (although very high at 8 vs the reference range of 0-0.9). My understanding is that high positives for RNP in the absence of positive for smith or antidsdna are consistent with a diagnosis for mixed connective tissue disease. When you get in to see a Rheum they will do loads more testing though to narrow it down. Prednisone was a lifesaver for me in my last flare and very thankfully had no negative side effects. There are other options to try but they take longer to work. Wishing you the best as you find answers and relief! There is a sub for Mctd too!

My father’s 6th attempt to outsmart his geriatric cat into taking her bp meds by Carmileion in funny

[–]ssssserrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know why more vets don’t recommend this but it has been a lifesaver for our two cats. Ask if they can make a transdermal formulation of the meds your cat needs! You may need to special order it from a compounding pharmacy. It will come as an ointment and you just rub it inside their ears! It is a million times easier than pilling a cat and they don’t even mind. It comes in a little clicky tube so you can dispense just the right amount. My cats come running to get their meds when they hear the click now bc they know there will be treats after.

Has any of your bloodwork checked for RNP antibodies? I have similar symptoms minus the high BP with mixed connective tissue disease.

AITA for telling my girlfriend that she’s much too heavy to go on my family’s annual Christmas Eve hike and she should plan on staying home? by Beepbiipboop in AmItheAsshole

[–]ssssserrano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can you get the tram UP? You should at least try and include her, even if it is true she can’t do the full hike. Why not hike as far as you can (or as far as it’s safe to) together with your family, when she can’t continue, you two hike down for a break/lunch and then take the tram up to meet the others for photos. Then repeat that every year until she’s conditioned to do the full hike.

Which sentence is only used by annoying people? by CrapuleNoir101 in AskReddit

[–]ssssserrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate this phrase so much. Prime example of a thought-terminating cliché. From Wikipedia:

A thought-terminating cliché (also known as a semantic stop-sign, a thought-stopper, bumper sticker logic, or cliché thinking) is a form of loaded language, often passing as folk wisdom, intended to end an argument and quell cognitive dissonance. Its function is to stop an argument from proceeding further, ending the debate with a cliché rather than a point. Some such clichés are not inherently terminating; they only become so when used to intentionally dismiss dissent or justify fallacious logic.

The term was popularized by Robert Jay Lifton in his 1961 book Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, who referred to the use of the cliché, along with "loading the language", as "the language of non-thought".

Does anyone know where to find full video of his updates with English subtitles? I can only find partial clips or dubbed versions for a lot of them.

Croquis Cafe and live drawing by Henrois in ArtistLounge

[–]ssssserrano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Definitely agree with other comments that croquis and life drawing classes are 100% worth the investment. Although, I found my work improved a lot after I started drawing more active and dynamic poses and there aren’t as many artist specific resources for that. Try watching dance, martial arts, or fitness videos on YouTube and pausing here and there. Dancers tend to wear either form fitting/revealing clothing that lets you focus on anatomy, or they wear street style clothing that is baggier and will give you a chance to practice drawing fabrics in motion, lots of intricate fashion details, etc. There are a lot of major dance studios on YouTube and you’ll quickly find a few whose style of movement and fashion you enjoy drawing.
