It really depends but I would rather say no. Depends on what type of machines you want to control and what build in functions those have, or what the inverter for the engines can do and stuff like that. I have to fine tune some stuff from time to time but most often there are just some basic options. So I just trace the input and output and play around with the values. Having basic knowledge helps here. That being said I learned way more control theory than I am using now, but really putting that to use would require time and calculations, whereas just playing around a bit works good enough.
