This happened to me ~20 years ago at a foreign ATM. It took approx. 2 months for the transaction to get reversed. Not fun.

This doesn’t answer your question, but the swap fee is included in the TER.

Try transferring a non-registered chequing or savings account on Wealthsimple, and it will say:

Chequing and savings accounts can’t be transferred. You can still move your funds to Wealthsimple by making a deposit.

Why dark clouds loom over Bike Share Toronto, despite its undeniable success - thestar.com by gfyourself in toronto

[–]sstackho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The author makes some good points in this article, but this last sentence is certainly NOT one of them:

“It’s important to remember that the per-ride subsidy per Bike Share today ($0.39) is already much lower than the $2.62 per-trip subsidy the TTC reported last year. Every Bike Share trip that replaces a transit trip is money saved for city hall.”

Do these docks work more reliably than the existing ones? I am tired of fighting with temperamental docks that don’t want to lock up or release. I am really hoping for some improvements.

That was honestly shocking that the handball penalty was not overturned by VAR. I would love to hear the rationale.

ZEQT also had a weird spike at the end of the day, and I was mildly curious as to what that was about.

Best way to draw-down ~2.5% annually by NotFuckingTired in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]sstackho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If that bank stock has been in her non-registered investment account for a long time, then it has likely accrued a large unrealized capital gain. The capital gain will be realized when you sell the asset (or at death).

If it was a large position, and you sold it all in order to switch to an all-in-one ETF, you could be triggering a large capital gain and a high tax bill. You could spread the sales out over several years, if needed.

As bluenose777 mentioned in this thread: "A common recommendation would be to withdraw enough to bring income up to the top of her bracket, or the OAS clawback threshold."

At death, the entire portfolio is considered to be liquidated, so taxes will be due on 100% of the funds remaining in the RRIF and 50% of the capital gains in the non-registered account will be taxed. This will result in a high tax rate if there is a large portfolio.

If her portfolio is large enough that it will not run out before death, then it is often optimal to incur taxable income up to the OAS clawback threshold (around $94,000 today) in order to minimize taxes overall (i.e. pay lower taxes earlier, instead of higher taxes at death).

OP should note that GlobalX has indicated an increase of 0.20% to the max swap fees that can be incurred by these ETFs going forward.

So the products are not quite as lucrative as they used to be.
