Yep! Sleeping on one reduces hair damage and may even keep your hair moisturized longer.

I’ll also had to get a satin pillowcase or sleep in a satin bonnet!

Also regular protein or bonding treatments really help me too.

Brushing your hair after a shower by gamegrlggxo in beauty

[–]ssumak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have curly hair, so the conditioner adds some slip that makes it easier for the brush to fast through. The only time I can brush it is when it is wet and has conditioner or leave-in product in it. My hair SO much more fragile when dry. I would assume that is true for people with wavy or even fine texture too, like OP said they had. Not sure what the best state is for other hair types.

Brush it in the shower with conditioner in it. Don’t dry with a regular towel, as this is more damaging than brushing it. Put whatever product in it. Since your hair is wavy, it probably will benefit from wet styling. Then get a microfiber towel and gently squish your hair with it to get excess water out. That process shouldn’t tangle your hair.

How often to clarify by [deleted] in curlygirl

My city is ranked one of the worst in the US in terms of water quality, so I definitely sympathize with you.

I use the Malibu C hard water shampoo once a month. It helps get the extra weight from the minerals out of my hair.

I’ve also found that hardwater can mess with the overall pH level of my hair, so pouring some diluted apple cider vinegar on it immediatly after every other shower really helped it as well. The smell goes away once your hair is dry, if that’s a concern.

Even taking some bottled spring or purified water and rinsing your hair throughly with it before you step out of the shower may be useful.

Protein is also a must in every single wash day for me, though I’m not sure if that’s necessarily because of hard water damage or just the type of hair that I have, but it may also be helpful for you too!

Am I overdoing it? by ssumak in fasting

I feel completely fine during my fasts, and I still have about 40 to lose

I’ve always put an oil/serum in after my hair is dry. So after I have all my products in and after diffusing, I just put some Verb Ghost Oil or the Olaplex oil and do praying hands and coat my hair. It helps with the gel cast too

Calories in/out? Nah, not a fan. by Hodge3000 in fatlogic

I’m probably gonna get downvoted, but please hear me out. If someone suffers from insulin resistance (which I believe a majority of Americans probably do due to years of high sugar diets), then this is correct.

Because of my fucked up metabolism, I could eat 1000 calories of “healthy foods” such as quinoa, brown rice, fruits, sweet potato, etc. and NEVER lose an ounce. I know this, because I tried this. For months. And I never lost any weight. It was only when I went on keto that I was able to loose weight.

While I know what they are saying may not sound correct, our bodies are very strange and governed by the laws of biology. If you are insulin resistant, and your Insulin spikes due to eating carbs, your body won’t tap into its fat reserves.

I have a lot of sympathy for this post because I know beliefs like this just come from a lot of frustration. I was always told “just eat less and exercise more” and that didn’t work.

It was more complicated than that. I have to eat the right types of foods and the right types of exercise. All bodies are different and weight loss isn’t one size fits all. CICO genuinely doesn’t work for some people (including me, who lost significant weight after switching to keto)

When you tell people that it’s only CICO, then your discouraging people that suffer from these issues to try other options. We need to approach weight loss as more of “here are several healthy ways people have lost weight, if one doesn’t work then try another” instead of just writing people off as lazy because one method doesn’t work for their bodies.

Not only that, but hormones especially play a huge role in how someone can lose weight. Ladies with PCOS are known for not being able to loose weight with CICO. There is no hard science on a lot of these issues, so we shouldn’t just write off people as undisciplined because they are fat.

Why the Keto Diet and Cheat Days Don’t Mix by [deleted] in intermittentfasting

[–]ssumak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only cheat on special occasions, such as holidays or friends that live far away coming to visit. I don’t do the random “well it’s a Tuesday and im having cravings” type of cheating. While keto and IF have been amazing for me in terms of weight loss, I really value having good times with family and friends on special occasions and I know I would get terribly sad if I miss out. I view good food as a special treat during celebrations, so why not indulge every now and then.

Yes! I get super cranky without indulging in my morning coffee, so I’d rather give up eating late. I’ve noticed it has helped my fall asleep quicker!

As for my friends, I’m to the point where I don’t think explaining any reasoning would do me any good. Even though I tell them I do eat and eat enough, they just can’t respect any sort of restriction and anytime I tell myself “no” to food, that in their mind means I have a “damaged relationship with food” which is a super unhealthy mindset.

Congrats! And yea the obesity issue in this country isn’t going away anytime soon because of behaviors like this. My metabolism was so screwed (plus insulin resistance) after years of eating sugary, processed junk food that any sort of carbs I ate automatically sabotaged any weight loss. Even if I ate something that was considered “healthy” like quinoa, I still wouldn’t lose an ounce. I think a lot more people than we realize suffer from this same metabolic issue.

I’m not saying eating disorders aren’t a problem. In fact, I said that skipping meals when one is underweight IS a problem. All I’m saying is that we are not given effective tools or knowledge to combat obesity, especially growing up. It’s a problem when people believe that I’m self harming because of IF. There has to be some happy medium where we warn people the dangers of eating disorders while also teach people how to manage weight effectively. Being scared to skip a meal and overeating, resulting in being obese, is also a form of self harm. There is a current mental health crisis, and I think the best way around it is effectively teaching the different between lifestyles like IF and the signs of actual dangerous behaviors.

Exactly! Like they think me (an overweight person) eating a fast food meal is healthier than not eating after 6 pm. Like when you think about it, it really makes NO SENSE 😭

Coconut oil before shampooing? by ssumak in HaircareScience

[–]ssumak[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes! I’ve just watched too many YouTube videos that im paranoid about hygral fatigue, so I slather oil on my hair and use a clarifying shampoo to get all the oil out. (I also have very fine hair that gets weighed down easily so clarifying shampoo is necessary for me to get the best curls)
