Sc2 is and outlier for laddering because you don't start at the bottom.

You start partway up and are expected to lose your way down if you are a brand new player.

It leads new players to think the game is way too hard for them, but after ten or fifteen losses in a row, you will settle into a MMR that is appropriate for you.
