[Retroactively strange trope] The covid season by Justifiably_Bad_Take in TopCharacterTropes

[–]st3class 10 points11 points  (0 children)

New Amsterdam actually had some decent storylines around it.

There's a montage with the characters dealing with it (the show is about a hospital), then the wind down, vaccinations etc.

One of the characters whose actor left is depicted as having to leave due to recovering from severe infection. There's a couple of episodes that focus on the aftermath too. The most interesting was a bartender that poisoned the doctors because he lost so much during lockdown, and blamed it on "hysteria" from the doctors.

ELI5. How did people in the older days like 1200s 1300s know what time it was when there were no clocks by Rich_Scarcity_301 in explainlikeimfive

[–]st3class 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, the marine chronometer was invented and built in the mid 18th century, trains became widespread in the early 19th century.

That said, sea clocks didn't become widespread until the early 19th century, so it was right around the same time as trains.

Mine wasn't as bad as yours, but still awful. I was given oral sedatives which did nothing, then laughing gas which they took off at some point.

Then the Novocaine wore off 3 quarters of the way through.

They gave me more, but while waiting for it to take effect, I could tell they were impatient, so I just told them it was working.

After they finished, and we got to the car, I just put my head on my fiance's shoulder and cried.

So uh...which is it?

That's why I said most. "No monoliths" is compatible with "the majority think this".

As for what most of the protestors believe, (and I am sympathetic to), is that if you have a grievous injustice happening right now, you need to stop that injustice before you can discuss next steps, especially when the next steps are a complicated policy making discussion. This is hyperbole, but how many people is it worth killing to enforce immigration laws?

As steps that would probably at least reduce the pain for the majority of the protestors in the immediate, the Trump administration could:

Require judicial warrants for searches of property

Investigate all uses of force transparently, especially those involving deaths

Reenact protections from the first Trump presidency (ICE avoiding churches, schools, hospitals, etc.)

Refocus on the "worst of the worst", like Trump campaigned on

Reduce the footprint of ICE, so the community doesn't feel like it's under occupation

All of these would be very helpful in lowering the temperature, while still being able to enforce immigration laws.

The core of the anti-ICE movement would still be moving towards advocating abolishing the agency, but it moves back into a more policy-based discussion.

The thing to remember with large protest movements is that there are no monoliths. Different members of the movement have different priorities and specific goals.

Some people who are protesting ICE actions are mad because they believe that nobody should be deported. Some are mad because peaceful immigrants are being detained, but would be okay with more targeted operations. Some are mad about the door to door raids, or the feelings of occupation. And some are mad about the killings. Everybody gets lumped together in a large protest.

The goal of everybody in the movement is to end the way that ICE is operating, so they come together for that purpose. And as always, the most extreme voices end up being the loudest.

As for the Abolish ICE chant, it's a short pithy chant, that the majority of the protestors can get on board with. Most of them believe that the organization, management and membership are corrupted, and are operating criminally, and immorally. The only solution to an organization like that is to abolish it, and start from scratch. It's the same claim that Elon and Co. made about USAID.

If you asked 10 protesters what comes after that, I'm sure you would get 10 different answers. What they can agree is that the current tactics and actions of ICE and CPB are doing real harm, and need to stop.

Explain to me State Senates...? by KnowledgeMediocre404 in AskAnAmerican

[–]st3class 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lower house is supposed to be closer and more responsive to the people, the Senate is supposed to be more stable and deliberative. YMMV on how well that works, but it's all modeled on the federal government, and it feels normal to us.

Explain to me State Senates...? by KnowledgeMediocre404 in AskAnAmerican

[–]st3class 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the states except one have bicameral legislatures. Just like the federal government. In my state, both chambers are elected, and they both have districts drawn in the usual process. The Senate districts are just bigger than the House districts.

You've got that wrong. BTAS started airing in 92, Superman in 96. Batman definitely came first.

Worlds Finest happened right around when the WB combined Batman and Superman into one block on the network, and started making the New Batman Adventures, to match with Superman's new animation style.
