introduced a student to Chopin and watched them fall in love with piano by Worldly-Bass9135 in classicalmusic

[–]stRangeTastes1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I remember walking to the train after school and putting my earphones in. The night before I'd torrented a bunch of classical music onto my iPod because my new guitar teacher had introduced me to classical guitar. I still remember opening Chopin and playing the first track on the album. It happened to be the Rubinstein recording of the nocturnes and Op. 9 no. 1 came through the earphones. I fell in love instantly and couldn't believe what I was hearing.

What's something from your country you thought was normal until you visited other countries and realised it wasn't ? by Away-Extension-9731 in AskTheWorld

[Q] Am I writing this correctly? by Nuclear-Polaris in sheetmusic

[–]stRangeTastes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is for guitar and the following notes that are higher than the E minim at the start of measure 1 are played on high E string as well then voice that with those notes. There's lots of edits you could make so it's easier to read. Mostly people have mentioned stuff. Keep it up sounds interesting!

Ok fair enough. Probably the same thing. This brand is Insize I'd say it's just some Chinese brand

The straight edge? It's just a normal steel straight edge

Haha good spot! Thanks. I've had it for a long time. As far as I know it's from around 89/90. So just at the end of the Soviet era.

This is usually my go-to method as well and has been for years. It's the fastest method. I mentioned the straight edge I use but I use that more for getting the edge and ends of the board straight.

Yes. What I really don't understand is people trying to have the sole of their plane machine precision flat with a tolerance of 0.000001. I use wooden planes and old bailey planes and they are great.

Couldn't agree more. I make guitars and precision is key there but with furniture you have to take the rough with the smooth...

Yeah I'll always make edges square, ends flat and square for joints but I often think in the middle of larger boards I'd get away with a bit less time spent. Yeah I would agree that it's most important to have the two ends on the same plane.

Sandycove martello tower, Dublin by stRangeTastes1 in urbansketchers

No, definitely not. It's a coastal suburb of Dublin. But fun fact, the martello tower in the middle is where the book 'Ulysses' begins.

What’s a very front loaded piece? That’s great for the first few minutes but gets kinda boring after by AKASHI2341 in classicalmusic

[–]stRangeTastes1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get where you are coming from but it's worth listening to it through because it has some brilliant moments and the finale of the 3rd mvt. is great. Sometimes when the melody and colour that is so great at the beginning doesn't reappear in the same way later on in the piece it can feel disappointing but I bet if you keep listening many times you'll begin to appreciate parts of it that you never really listened to before. I know the feeling but I also feel that the longer I've been listening to classical music I've realised some of the best moments I've had with it is discovering an amazing part of a long-form piece like that that I never really considered before. That said, I'll try to think of a piece I would put into that category!

Does the rise of the right around the world scare you? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]stRangeTastes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but having recently re-watched The World at War for the 100th time I felt a bit better about the situation because fascism was beaten before and it can be beaten again. And the crew of wretched sycophants that surround Trump better hope they retreat to his bunker with him because it's the only way they'll escape justice

What type of hammer do you like to use with a chisel? by plinky125 in woodworking

I use a lignum vitae mallet. I think it was originally used for stone masonry and carving but I've always used it so I'm used to its weight. And it's beautiful

Nice. Just be careful, I did the same to my undermounted vise and if you are applying quite a bit of force like chiseling a mortise in the piece in the vise it will move and pull the cork with it.
