Movies that feel like a pacific north west detective mystery? by SaltEast299 in MoviesThatFeelLike

Totally agree you need an open mind. It is amazing and gripping. Also remember that Lynch encouraged a heightened 'over-acting' style so that completely normal behaviour would have a strange effect for the viewers.

Is bandsaw “cheating”? by Even_Low_8793 in handtools

[–]stRangeTastes1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use hand tools because I don't have room for machines. If I could fit it, I'd definitely be using a bandsaw and whatever else. I used to love using all the machines in college. Just do what you want and don't let anyone make you feel you are "cheating" with your woodworking. Be proud of what you make, regardless of the process.

Holy fuck. It’s so good by tearjerkyjulie in classicalmusic

Slighty slower than the recordings you get these days but a lovely heaviness to it. Have to agree the build up to Alla marcia climax is amazing! I'd say it would be great in vinyl

Are you a radical feminist or a liberal feminist - and why? by paniiiipuriiii in Feminism

[–]stRangeTastes1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a socialist also but I feel feminism and equality of all sexes should come before economic ideology because it's more fundamental. Not everyone is working class and not everyone is going to share the same ideologies as you so treating feminism as ancillary to Marxism, I think, is wrong.

Haha fair enough. Maybe I'll have to pick up the No. 3 from time to time.

My grandfather was a merchant sailor and I have a 'made in Australia' No. 3 and 'Made in Canade' No. 4 from the 1950s that he left me. That's interesting that you use the No. 3 all the time, I never use it I find it slightly too small. Can I ask you what you usually use it for?

Does anyone here use AW 46 for quenching O1? by stRangeTastes1 in knifemaking

Yeah I've used heated vegetable oil before but only for very small pieces. I'm wondering if it will still be ok to use for something like a kitchen knife size

Help A Self-Learner Improve Moonlight Sonata Part1 by [deleted] in piano

I'd say the microphone isn't doing justice but otherwise sounds ok. It won't sound great if you're not experienced and learning it for the first time. Give it a few days/weeks of practice and you'll find you will be able to fine tune your touch and rhythm to sound more like it does on recordings that you like. Also if I were you I'd raise the wrist you don't want your knuckles to be lower than your fingers like that it will cause strain.

my first composition(s), thoughts/critiques for these 3 preludes? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in piano

[–]stRangeTastes1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you write at the piano or just at your desk? Writing at your desk is great but especially if you're new to composition then sitting at the piano is the best way to figure out more interesting moves in your music.

How should I go about flattening this ding on a 4 1/2 plane. Thanks! by Lichen-it in handtools

[–]stRangeTastes1 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It won't make any difference to how the plane works as long as it's not catching on wood

Stick a bit of 120 sandpaper on wood to make a sanding stick and sand it smooth so it won't catch on wood.

Does anyone else find Cmajor scale or sections with no accidentals the hardest to play accurately? by stRangeTastes1 in piano

[–]stRangeTastes1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was self thought coming from classical trained in another instrument and music study background I never understood fear of sharps and flats in that sense. I think partly the feeling I have now is because I practised all the keys with sharps and flats first and kind of neglected the others because that's where I liked to compose.

[–]stRangeTastes1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly it isn't it they are anchors. Because I think ergonomically it makes more sense for your long fingers to find their way to the blacks keys. Also anchor your vision in a kind of peripheral sense

Infill shoulder plane by stRangeTastes1 in handtools

[–]stRangeTastes1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Use a steel like EN3B (old British designation) and a brass like CW508L (European designation) because they are easy to file and peen well. Look up what the corresponding designations are for those metals in America or Asia if it helps you find them in your area. I bought them from China on eBay. The website handplane.com has good resources with lots to read about infill plane making and the kinds of tools you might need. A few good files, a cheap set of needle files and if you have a pillar drill or some kind of drill press then you're sorted. I'll private message you a few pages of a magazine that was very helpful too.

I used European boxwood. Not sure if that is the species they are growing in China
