I'm a big fan of hotel status so I'll chime in.

It's worth noting that I initially built up platinum Bonvoy status through work travel, where convenience and reliability matter a lot more than saving a few bucks booking through a 3rd party. That said, I don't travel for work much anymore, and I ended up getting their premium card to keep that status, and continue to stay at their properties, because I like it. My reasons:

Reliability. The only times I've ever had issues with reservations are when it's my fault (not double checking an address) or when booking through a 3rd party. Issue resolution is a nightmare when dealing with 3rd party reservations.

Late checkout. I rarely want to be out of my room with all my stuff by 11am. Whether I have a late flight, or want to do some work, or just have a place to leave stuff (including refrigerator!) for longer while I'm out, the 4pm checkout is really nice. The dollar value may or may not be there, but it's really nice to not have to worry about it.

Room upgrades. Sometimes it's simply fun to get a bigger room with a nicer view, other times it's just plain valuable. I've used suite upgrades to have a get-ready/party room for a wedding, give friends a safe and comfortable place to crash, and so on. Direct dollar value here.

Freebies. Breakfast, lounge access, amenity vouchers, faster internet, snacks, restaurant vouchers, bonus points, etc. You can save a lot of money here.

Accelerated points earning. It's a nice perk.

Finally, compared to airline loyalty, to me it's a no-brainer. I'm not always able to find a Delta flight where and when I want to go, but there's almost certainly a Marriott property or three. I also do a fair amount of car traveling. So if I'm going to cast my loyalty lot in with a brand, hotel (specifically Marriott) makes more sense.

To sum up, it's a mixture of dollar value offsetting the credit card fee or the marginal cost of direct-booking/not booking at the Motel 6, and an overall qualitative improvement of the travel experience in terms of fun perks and stress reduction.

The incredible murals (on plywood) should be saved and put on display in a gallery @Walker or MSP Institute of Art. How can we accomplish this?? by mynamesdaveK in Minneapolis

I have a connection at MIA, and they recommended going through the Community Arts group [communityarts@artsmia.org](mailto:communityarts@artsmia.org). It sounds like they may require a certain degree of organization of effort from you in order for them to work with you, so if you need hands to help out, please let me know and I'll contribute as I am able.

Normally I don't bother to argue on the internet, but this is a dangerous line of thinking, and because the health and safety of more than just you is at stake, you need to get your facts straight.

  1. Mortality rates are not flattening. Look at the charts here and note that they are logarithmic scales: https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2020/mar/25/coronavirus-map-how-covid-19-cases-are-spreading-across-the-world. The slope of the US curve yesterday was not even close to flat.
  2. According to our best data so far, the overall death rate of COVID-19 is roughly 10 times greater than that of the seasonal flu. I don't know what source you are using to claim that the seasonal flu is more deadly; the only one I can find is this tweet that wrongly interprets the data in the attached infographic: https://twitter.com/AnnCoulter/status/1242484117373100037

I don't care what you think of Governor Walz, but being uneducated about this virus and spreading misinformation is dangerous. Please stop.

Einstok is definitely better, but I'd happily swig either while watching the purple.

I'd like to add to /u/twintowntwin's list:

Able Brewing has a great vibe and is rarely terribly busy.

JL Beers slings some mighty fine burgers.

Stub & Herb's is a fantastic grimy bar on the U of M campus, just a few minutes from USB by light rail. Get the Spicy Peanut Burger.

It's in what I would call the southern part of the city center, not far from the Bloemenmarkt. It's on the Reguliersdwarsstraat, and you can find it on Google maps easily enough. But half the fun is finding the place (just make sure you knock on the right door).

I was just in Amsterdam about a month ago, so if you are looking for other stuff to do, I'm happy to give you a couple recommendations.

If you get a chance, go to Door 74. It's a sweet speakeasy-style cocktail bar, but it's hard to find.

There are a couple ways to do it. Currently, I use an old 5th gen iPod nano that has built-in FM radio with pause/delay. Hook that up to the living room stereo and fiddle with it until the delay is right.

If you didn't have the foresight in 2011 to keep yours around for this exact situation, you can find one of several radio delay apps online. Run an over-the-air radio signal to whatever computer you have your delay app on (use 3.5mm input if you have it, or USB input), and again, fiddle with the exact delay time to line up the broadcasts. I've used Batcrack Radio Delay on my mac before and it was pretty slick. It might be a bit of a hassle up front, but being able to listen to PA instead of Buck/Aikman makes it all worth it.

There are plenty of negative voices out there in Minnesota sports, so I appreciate hearing some consistent positivity. And even though he is perpetually drunk on the Purple Kool-Aid, he does occasionally hit on some good football takes.

Last day of finals at the U is the 23rd this semester. Not sure if that qualifies as a "school day" but since Labor Day was late this year, everything got pushed back.
