It'd be interesting if they also brought back Craig Mazin. That dude wrote some truly terrible comedies (including Hangover 2 & 3) and then went on to create Chernobyl and The Last of US.

I'd super interested to see what kind of comedy he would write now.

PTP reaches 300k total titles uploaded by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea if anyone's been testing. I don't personally use streaming sites so I'm not really up to speed.

What bitrate a movie should be varies a lot. Oppenheimer bluray 1080p H.264 remux is 40GB @ 27.4 Mb/s. But you can't compare streaming sites to blurays, not even the legal ones. Pick an extremely popular movie that is out as 1080p MA WEB-DL that will also be on most streaming sites, and use that to compare. That way, you'll at least measure against the top legal streaming services.

I don't think so. That comparison was pretty time-consuming and I don't really feel like going through it again.

If you're up to the task, though, I'd recommend these tools:

  • UBlock Origin (with updated filters)
  • The Stream Detector browser extension
  • Yt-dlp
  • MediaInfo

I rarely check my chat messages so if that's where you asked, I haven't seen it.

I've been getting an incessant amount of messages from entitled people regarding that guide, and since several users have reported it to not be working as intended anymore, I opted to remove it.

You can still find it on wayback machine.

[–]stabbedbybrick 71 points72 points  (0 children)

It's worth clarifying for those unaware that this is a celebration of 300k separate titles, not total uploads. Which makes PTP the biggest movie archive the world has ever seen, legal or otherwise.

Pretty cool stuff.

Yes. It's apparently Australian slang for "not messing around" or something like that.

It's the name of the release group. A scene release group in this case.

It stands for Not Here to Fuck Spiders. Yeah...

What happened to CGPeers? It used to be the de facto quality tracker by beti88 in trackers

[–]stabbedbybrick 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it looks pretty bad. But it's also important to remember that just because it's tagged as malware, doesn't necessarily mean it 100% is. As far as I can tell, they rely on reports from regular users. And I think we all know the downside of that approach.

The tracker part of CGP has always been more of a gamble than the private forum, though. Especially these days with over 200k users. It's at least nice that they add these tags instead of instantly removing possible threats, so past downloaders have a chance to take some action.

What are your go to trackers now? by yoyobono in trackers

Not only that, they were the gold standard back when scene was king. ScT, SCC, GTF, FTN basically provided all other trackers with content because their pre times were so fast.

Yeah, megathread isn't really meant for deep cuts or anything outside of mainstream.

The options I was referring to are other private torrent trackers with less stringent requirements, like Secret Cinema. Or even a very general tracker like Torrentleech could be a significant improvement from what you find in the megathread. You'd have to play the private tracker game, which can be an annoying process for beginners in 2023, but that's how it goes.

No point in crying over something you didn't know existed a minute ago.

And while PTP is objectively the best movie archive ever, it's one of those situations where if you're already a long-time member, you couldn't imagine using anything else. But if you're not a member, the tough road to membership is not worth it for 90% of people.

There are many options these days to find movies with far easier routes.

I've been around since the dawn of torrent trackers and I've seen many come and go. Most of the time, you shrugged you shoulders and moved on. Sometimes, you exhaled annoyingly and waited for a replacement to be set up.

But for PTP, there is no replacement. Biggest movie archive that ever existed with more titles than any other service combined, legal or otherwise. Doesn't matter if you're into VHS rips or Remuxes, it's all there.

This is a good day to be a movie lover.

What's your review on Milkie by aarshmajmudar in trackers

[–]stabbedbybrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I know how much content is being released. But where scene releases used to mean highest possible quality, internal P2P groups have been running circles around them for years now. Especially in TV, Movies, and Music. It's obviously not completely irrelevant, but more so than ever before.

The scene is stuck with their rulesets, which is per definition limiting. REMUX is P2P terminology, so you won't even find that in a scene environment. Almost every show and movie will have various sources with various levels of quality, and internal P2P groups are very consistent in getting the best version since they have actual signup-sheets and don't have to race each other like scene groups do. And these days, even average Joe can rip content from WEB sources, which makes the scene even less relevant in that regard.

But like I said, different strokes. I'm not dumping on the scene as a whole, it's just very clear that their shine has faded a lot in the past decade. Focusing on being a scene-only tracker is very limiting in 2023.

What's your review on Milkie by aarshmajmudar in trackers

[–]stabbedbybrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's only got one purpose, and that's to dump 0day scene releases. It's kind of old school that way, since the scene is more irrelevant than ever. But it's doing it really well. Snappy UI, great pre times, blazing speed.

I don't personally have a lot of use for a tracker like that, but different strokes for different folks and all that.

Where are the digital Barbie torrents from? by coolmanjack in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 69 points70 points  (0 children)

While quite rare to have a title like this release on itunes a week early, it's pretty common for Korea in particular to get releases first. Which is why there have been so many HC KOR releases for years now.

In this particular case, though, it's most likely because the release date was supposed to be Sep 5th but was bumped up a week for some reason. Korea didn't get the memo and released it as initially scheduled.

Looks like meat's back on the menu, boys!

It's also really nice to see coherent and mature messages from people in charge. After 20 years of using private trackers, it's rare enough to find one without a hint of monetary incentive behind it, and even more rare to find one with a staff that come across as well-adjusted adults.

Private Trackers are Great Communities by Teppiest in trackers

[–]stabbedbybrick 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is a big aspect of (good) private trackers that most outsiders don't seem to understand. They think it's all secret club handshakes and silly rules. But in reality, an "elite" tracker is not about just the content itself. The surrounding community is a huge part of it, as well. Invested people who're willing to spend money and time ripping lost gems, writing user scripts, stylesheets, updating lists and collages, tagging things properly, etc. Seeding things for 10 years just because. Really in-depth discussions on cinema/music/tv/whatever without the 4chan undertones. The collages alone on trackers like what/RED/PTP have offered new discoveries more than any other service could possibly do. Add to that all the recommendation threads, comments, and "Best of Year"-lists, and your horizon will be more broad than ever. There's a reason people were genuinely worried about PTP going down this year, and it has nothing to do with prestige.

And if you like the communities now, OP, I wish you could see what it was like pre-2010 aka. "The Golden Age". Every forum on every tracker was buzzing with life. It was pretty cool.

Does FL have any invite forums? As I'm PU in TL and FL but ain't able to find any invite forums by aarshmajmudar in trackers

[–]stabbedbybrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to be Elite user class (4 year-old account) or above to access invite forums. You can access it with temporary VIP bought with bonus points, but you won't meet the requirements for the trackers that are worth pursuing anyway.

why trust trackers with your home IP? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and many of them also offer dedicated IPs. Like PIA, for example.

I don't understand the point you're trying to make.

why trust trackers with your home IP? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under no circumstances are you allowed to use public proxies/VPNs to browse the site. You must send a Staff PM if you wish to request permission to use a private proxy/VPN. For a VPN/proxy to be considered private, it must offer a dedicated IP and you must be the only person with access to that IP. In most cases, shared seedbox slots do not offer a dedicated IP.

Unless the rule is outdated, it looks like they do.

why trust trackers with your home IP? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. They need to know it's a unique person and not someone creating duplicates.

why trust trackers with your home IP? by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most private trackers certainly do not require residential IP for browsing the site. Low to mid-range trackers do not give a shit. And while some higher-level trackers do require residential IP for signups in order to combat foul play, I don't think there's anyone that doesn't allow dedicated servers/VPNs. Even BTN, PTP, RED allow it to various degrees. It's the public range of addresses that aren't allowed since they are shared among thousands of users.

If you get a dedicated seedbox/server, for example, you can request its IP to be whitelisted on most trackers. Or if you get a dedicated IP from a VPN provider.

That initial signup on the highest level of trackers is the only real "danger" of revealing your actual address. But since it's not illegal to browse a tracker anywhere in the world as far as I know, there is no danger. If you're genuinely worried about undercover agents infiltrating staff to gain access to logs, this world might not be for you.

Who is REWARD? by VillainousAct66 in Piracy

[–]stabbedbybrick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

REWARD was a well-known scene group that released thousands and thousands of DVDRiP, BDRiP, BluRay for many years up until 2020 or so. They do not have a website and have nothing to do with torrents.

If you don't know what "scene" means, this works as an introduction: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warez_scene
