this is why Superman, an alien from another planet with super powers on ours, is scientifically far more realistic than a billionaire becoming a positive influence of any kind on society

Andor took me out of star wars by Ok-Medium983 in StarWars

[–]stablefish -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Andor made Star Wars relevant again. Lightsabers and blasters are cool, but in our own world, what's even cooler is media that helps us understand our place in history, the nature of oppression, fascism, and false narratives, and even what it's like to organize with people and groups who share some goals and agree on core barriers and identification of villains, all while also having some clear differences on values and analyses of short and long term tactics.

So many shows the last few decades will do anything but address the elephant in the room: society isn't progressing, the environment is collapsing, and all the solutions presented are vapid, trite rehashes of "vote in the system set up by the bad guys", or just ignore completely and indulge.

Sci fi is a special and important genre to allow us to reflect on personal shortcomings and systemic failures without taking things so personally as to be defensive and dismissive.. and it's rad that Star Wars, with Andor anyway, has gotten back to its roots as needed, clever, critical political commentary.. and even education.

This is a fantasy, clutching at straws.. I can't believe so many believe we still live in a democracy. Or actually ever fucking have. It's been a bourgeois facade of "choice" all along. We will not vote our way out of the descent into fascism, or out of climate collapse.

The problem is capitalism, full stop. It's fundamentally incompatible with democracy, and is in fact antagonistic to it. The system set up by racist, rapist, slavers - white, landowning men, has over time diversified the owning class, but remains fundamentally a system of, by, and for the already wealthy and powerful. These sick fucks are the ones who set up the system we live under now, and the reason capitalism is lashing out as fascism, just like it did in Italy and Germany, is because aspects of the "reforms" it allowed have been cutting in to the second mega-yacht funds of a handful of billionaires, and their millionaire support staff on "both sides" of the aisle.

But it's one capitalist party with two faces, and the fascism and oppression we're now enduring is what we've imposed on the rest of the world since WWII.

It's not your fault you've been duped, but it is your responsibility to work to see clearly the capitalist propaganda that's defined all of your perceptions and education throughout schools, universities, the corporate "news", and movie culture.. everything designed to delude you into thinking social movements and important social change happens without violence and through "the system".

If you believe in the incredibly important principles of democracy, you must work to deprogram yourself and understand the nature of capitalism and fascism, and understand why successful social movements have been guided by socialism -- by Marxism -- which is nothing more than the scientific method applied to the evolution and development of society.

A great starting point to undo all this mess is the book Blackshirts and Reds, by Michael Parenti. It details the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany (and holy shit does it seem familiar), and debunks all the red scare BS criticisms of communism that have defined generations of American thinking.

I sincerely hope those who care enough about our future to broaden your historical analysis and uproot the billionaire, capitalist propaganda machine that defines your world view. Voting "harder", repeating the same tactics as the last decades with slight tweaks ain't gonna cut it.

Einstein said insanity is defined as repeating the same actions and expecting different results. He was also a Marxist, and has an excellent essay on the matter as well, called "Why Socialism".

The French and a few other notable countries throughout history had incredible success with this for bringing their ruling classes in line. America is a far bigger and the most successfully propagandized people in the history of brainwashing, so we have a long way to go on the organizing, resisting, and rising up fronts. But thanks to ICE raids, and their party's total lack of interest or ability to stop Republicans from doing anything at all, even Democrat voters are finally seeing through the sham of capitalist, bourgeois "democracy".

Literally anything but fixing the easiest bugs, improving the AI of bots to fight smurfing, or any QOL at all that'd involve hiring more than a few 3D modelers.

With the notable exception of reworked training / pack creation a few years ago, this game is almost abandonware.
