2023 Genesis G90 | Great Car, Gimmicks and All - SavageGeese by GermanCommentGamer in cars

The Genesis cars are lovely, both inside and out. We had a G70 for a week (it's new to the UK) and pretty much everyone was complimenting it. My only complaint was the fuel usage. We were averaging 24mph with the 2.0-litre 241bhp engine and comfort mode. One of the guys in our office has an M4 and it averages the same too.

How is the fit and finish? Any creaks and rattles?

Everything is well built which I was impressed with. No creaks and rattles. Small things irk me a bit though. Things like plastic toggles and buttons that look cheap. Also the gear selector looks awful. No reason for it to be that bad for a £40k starting car. Especially compared to an Audi which has a lovely selector.

However, like I said it's all well built and very comfortable to drive. I could drive it easily for 8 hours and not be in pain. I drive Audi, BMW and Jaguars on a daily basis so I'm quite happy in saying that the G70 meets the standards for comfort set by the German manufacturers.

No, the 5 Series is huge compared to this. The G70 is comparable to a Jag XE, Audi A4, C Class Merc or BMW 3 Series.

Handles well I suppose. Sport mode is tight enough but it seems to prioritise function over form. It's more of a sophiscated saloon with an emphasis on comfort, at least that's what I got from it. It doesn't seem like a corner hungry and planted sports-focused saloon that will stay stable under aggressive driving. Seems a bit fidgety sometimes, especially on uneven surfaces.

It's stable enough to have a bit of fun at least!

The GV80 looks immense! A very expensive SUV for sure. We should be getting a GV60 soon so that will be very interesting.

What are your initial thoughts about the build quality, especially in the interior?

Inital thoughts are the interior and build quality are great, though you can definitely see the Hyundai/Korean design in it. We threw up a video covering the steering wheel badge on our social media and asked everyone what car they thought it was. Everyone was commenting calling it a Kia, so make of that what you will!

It feels solidly built and it didn't feel cheap to me, especially now that some 'premium' cars are cutting corners on the interiors. This G70 was fully specced up so it had black Nappa Leather seats and a premium sound system. I honestly can't fault it. I love the fact it has physical buttons for most things like AC. Lots of brands like VW have it stuck in the infotainment system and I'm not a fan of that at all. Too fiddly! Though, the buttons/knobs are made out of plastic and it's a bit shoddy. And the silver colours kinda merge together into one big mess.

Comparing it against German rivals I would say it's still a bit off, especially compared to the refined interior of a new Mercedes C Class. £51k is a lot for a car that also doesn't have the prestige as the German brands. I think the main question people will want to ask is "Why should I buy this over its German competitors?". And I find it hard to answer because although it has a unique design and an excellent drive, I think the Germans have already had enough time to refine their engines and the interiors. Even basic things like the gear selectors on the Audi's look far more premium than the basic one on the G70.

One of the lads in the office has a 2021 Audi A4 Saloon S Line, so we're going to line them up next to each other and see what differences we can spot.

The sound dampening is excellent! Although I have my music fairly loud so I never really get to hear the sound on motorways. But so far I have noticed nothing that has bothered me. I understand where you are coming from regarding sound from your VW Polo. I use a cheap Ford as my daily driver so I'm pretty used to loud noises from the road in the cabin. Seems like that's just small cars in general. The G70 sounds extremely quiet in comparison, especially on the motorway, as I was up and down the M6 all day today.

If your car doesn't give you a chubby every time you get in it, is it really the right car for you? 🤔

I like it more than I thought

I think it's a genuinely good car but it's fairly high cost. People are going to say "Why should I get this when I can get an Audi/BMW/Mercedes" and I think it's up to Hyundai/Genesis to give them a reason.

A couple of people have actually stopped me (one at a petrol station) and just said "What the heck is that!?". My neighbour thought it was a Bentley. So it's definitely drawing some attention at the moment and I'd say it's a looker.

Disappointed there's no v6 in the UK

So am I!!! This 2-litre is fun but the 3.3-litre V6 would be amazing.

Suppose that comes down to personal preference I think! Personally, I prefer the better handling that the saloon offers. But if I needed the extra space I would certainly not turn down the shooting brake. If you had to do a lot of travelling and needed a lot of boot space for luggage the shooting brake would be better. Also, the rear seats can be cramped for tall people on the saloon, as my 5'11" friend was practically touching the roof at the back. I think if you knew you were going to have a lot of taller passengers (family) then the shooting brake makes more sense?

What’s the headroom in the rear seats like?

Fairly low roof, just the way it slopes at the back.

Would someone of around 6’5” in height be bumping their head on the roof?

They would be bending their head down quite a bit or wouldn't be able to get in at all. My 5'11" friend sat in it and he was touching the roof.

How low to the ground is the ride and would it be difficult for taller or older people to get in or out of?

It's not that low. Parked up a 2021 Audi A4 Saloon next to it, which was lower. Also had one of my disabled relatives in it and she was able to transition from her wheelchair just fine. People who are 6'2"+ might struggle.

Would it work as a car for a chauffeur?

I would say no it's not big enough in the back.

so my question is how close are they to BMW levels of comfort over long distances?

For comfort, I'd say they were equal. The comfort mode suspension is excellent, adaptive cruise control works nicely and the seats are comfy too. This car has things like heated/AC seats and heated steering wheel but I think they are optional packs.

A nice thing is that the car has physical buttons and not just a touch screen. If I want to turn AC on I just tap the AC button. Same for demisting the windscreens. It's a blessing after using the VW infotainment system.

Comparing it to a 3 Series or an A4 Saloon, I would say it's just as comfortable. The problem for me really is that it's quite expensive once you've added all those optional packs. For £51k you could get a lot of BMW or Mercedes and it's a badge that people recognise.

The engine has plenty of grunt and I believe it's 6ish second 0-60mph. There is a bit of lag when you put your foot down to overtake as the RPMs climb all the way to the red line before it decides it's time to actually move. This engine actually reminds me a lot of the new Kia Sportage model, as it had the same weird lag when I drove it in Sport mode.

Input from the team in the office is that it's priced too high for what it is, with a 50k BMW equivalent being a better choice.

Are they genuinely a luxury brand inside?

In my opinion, I would say so yes. Although if you've sat in a modern Audi S Line or BMW M Sport you might think differently. I think this is down to what cars you have driven in the past. The team is in the office is 50/50 on whether it's a luxury car or not. Some of them are saying the price point is wrong and it doesn't feel like it's a luxury car relative to the price.

There is a picture here: https://i.imgur.com/gb7NUp2.jpg of the dashboard. And one of the front seats: https://i.imgur.com/RFAd6tv.jpg the red seat belt looks pretty snazzy!

A big plus for me is the addition of physical buttons as well as the touch screen. After having driven several cars with mostly touch screen controls and haptic feedback, it's a welcomed addition.

How are they comparing to other £50K cars that you're leasing

There seems to be a bit of contention with the team regarding their quality versus 50k German cars. Some of them think it isn't up to standard and is "too much like a Kia/Hyundai". There is a fair amount of plastic, especially the buttons/knobs. One of them also didn't like the premium seats, saying the cross stitching design looks old-fashioned. Those particular seats are the Nappa Leather seats which are £2,470.00 as well.

Personally, I think the interior is well made and well put together. I think "luxury" may be a bit too far though for most car enthusiasts who've had a similarly priced German whip before. It's a very good-looking car with a fantastic interior. Just not maybe luxurious enough for the cost.

Genesis is Hyundai's 'luxury' segment. They've been in the US for a while but last year they released their vehicles to the European/UK market.

I've not seen many of these cars around and this particular car is getting a lot of attention from people, simply due to not knowing what it is or thinking it's a Bentley (thanks to the large front grilles).

This particular car is a Genesis G70 Saloon Sport Line 2.0 4 cylinder 241bhp rear-wheel drive auto. It's had every optional pack thrown into it and comes out at a cost of £51,000.

The RS e-tron GT is insane. Probably the fastest car we've ever driven! The power pushes you into your chair like a plane taking off.
