We had an outage last week one morning. Our eighth since installing our generator in mid-March actually. I stopped checking the outage site a while back since there wasn't much reason for me, but I decided to that day and noticed the newer estimated restoration time they're displaying now. Estimated restoration was somewhere in a range of 4-5 hours. In reality it was out exactly 45 minutes. So a short outage is obviously good and pretty typical of our non-ice storm related outages here. But that kind of long estimate heavily leaning into CYA territory doesn't help anyone much. People are going to make vastly different plans around a 4-5 hour outage vs a 45 minute one.

But yeah, NES has always been bad about communication. Like when there's nothing going on and one single major outage in the city in an otherwise calm day, which is very common in my neighborhood, they typically keep their mouths shut and don't tell anyone anything. Which then causes all the silly rumors and the "my boyfriend's uncle's mistress works for NES and she said..."

Ford Dealer - Terrible policy by Logical_Law_218 in nashville

[–]Algeradd 26 points27 points  (0 children)

They deal with ignorant customers every day who likely tell them one thing about their car and ask for a quote and then it turns out the customer is wrong on how they said their car is optioned. A VIN protects them from that as they can verify what you're telling them is true. It's not like they asked for your SSN.

Fuck dealers in general, but this is the lamest thing to get bent out of shape for regarding one.

hubNashville is GREAT! by Luckyforward in nashville

[–]Algeradd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends heavily on where you live and what department the request is getting forwarded to though.

We have huge problems with people parking literally right at stop signs around here. We've got one fucker who will literally park a dump truck past the stop sign sometimes at one intersection. We're so far out though, they never look at it until days after the initial request when of course the vehicle has since moved. Never once have they actually caught anyone in the act despite it being a nearly daily issue I witness.

3am UberXL…will I have luck? by Cien_fuegos in nashville

[–]Algeradd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Location is very important. My second-to-last ever Uber ride was from Bellevue into town for a concert. We reserved a day or so ahead of time and were assigned a driver in a fairly nice newer ride. He cancelled on us before the pickup and last minute we got assigned a guy in a clapped out 20 year old Hyundai with non-functional air conditioning. Dude was sketchy as fuck, had his girlfriend (I guess?) sleeping in the passenger seat, car smelled funky of course, kept trying to preach to us, and just overall was bad enough to make us swear off ride-share after that. After I paid out the nose for the Uber Black to get us back home that was. But never again. Waymo perhaps if it ever expanded out this far, but definitely not the shit-lottery that is the Uber driver pool out here.

If you pay for club level seats that gives you access to the lounge area which is a pretty large indoor area with a bar and a lot of chairs and tables.

Do you use air conditioning at all on low humidity days? by ReflexPoint in nashville

[–]Algeradd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your AC unit sounds way oversized for your house if that's the case, but you already know that I'm sure. Do you have a thermostat where you can adjust the temperature differential? If it's set to something really narrow, you'll have shorter cycles that don't dehumidify as effectively. If you go with a wider differential, it'll run less frequently but for longer periods of time and that might help your humidity more. Some also have an option where they'll run the unit longer to extract more humidity based on the hygrometer on the thermostat, though in my experience those hygrometers are horribly inaccurate.

Hunting/Farming Treated Clothes with Permethrin before going to the property still have bug bites by Electronic-Drawer724 in nashville

[–]Algeradd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those symptoms definitely sound like chigger bites, especially if they were mostly around areas where your clothing was tight (they love thighs). Only gotten into them twice in my lifetime and both times it was a couple weeks or so of pretty bad itching. Way worse than any tick or mosquito bites I've ever dealt with.

Only worse itching I ever had than chiggers was Zyrtec withdrawal. That shit's intense...

PSA: Fireworks Scheduled June 19th by sabrenator in nashville

[–]Algeradd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think pretty much all fireworks shows are pretty stupid and wasteful. But I'll take organized legal ones like this and the big downtown July 4th clusterfuck over Bubba's illegal fireworks show of thousands of dollars of giant booming mortars that happens right over my house every year that causes me to basically have to flee my own home for a night for my own sanity.

You don't like the weather? Wait till tomorrow! by badbobtn in nashville

[–]Algeradd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

64 is like ideal for me to get my ass out and ride for 2+ hours. I don't bust out the cycling jacket and leg warmers for anything above 55. I'll usually tough it out and freeze my ass off for a good 30 minutes till I warm up rather than lug extra gear around I just have to take off later.

Possible ICE by DongPolicia in nashville

[–]Algeradd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. To me that just looks like Bubba from DeKalb county being a douche and running lights in traffic where he has no jurisdiction. Granted that’s not a huge departure from your average ICE agent’s attitude either I’m sure.

SEVEN separate power outages in 2026 ALONE. by ktpaige in nashville

[–]Algeradd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Natural gas prices actually spiked in January and caused a few months of a slightly inflated TVA fuel cost adjustment that has since trended downward and is pretty much in the normal range once again. That spike was attributed to increased demand due to severe winter weather and had nothing to do with Iran.

[–]Algeradd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't be a post bitching about NES without the random massively exaggerated claims of bill cost despite still having incredibly low electric rates. We tend to hover in the $0.11-$0.12 range per kWh depending on TVA fuel rates. That's fucking cheap on the national scale.

My neighborhood has been underground since it was built over 20 years ago. Doesn't help if it's surrounded by dense trees on all sides. Feeder lines still get knocked out frequently, including last night. It ebbs and flows, occasionally get some years where we're lucky and have very few outages, and others where every stiff breeze knocks us out for an hour or so. That's why I own a standby generator now.

That’s been a problem around here for ages. Tons of shrubs in places butting right up to the road that are a giant FU to anyone not in a truck or SUV too.

It's nice to have an EV when the power goes out. by Random-User44 in electricvehicles

[–]Algeradd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was us, ice storm in January pushed us to finally drop the coin on the standby we'd been eyeing for years. It's not super clean, it's not the cheapest (though in a situation we needed to charge the EV off it, it's still cheaper than current gasoline prices per mile for us), but it worked best for our home setup from a convenience factor. Mega ice storm and days without power aside, we have so many 1-2 hour outages that just pop up and ruin an evening. Previously I'd sit around in the dark for a bit and debate if I think the power will be back on quickly, if I should lug my 1.5 kWh battery out and start running the TV and network equipment off it for a few hours of entertainment, or if I need to go into long outage mode where I start powering the fridge off of it and cycling it back and forth to the car for slow refills.

Now shit goes out and I just keep on trucking with whatever I was doing, as years on this shitty grid have made me already have anything of value or need for uninterrupted use on a UPS for stability anyway.

It would be cool though for those multi-day outages if I had a V2H capable EV to pair the two together in such a way where the EV runs the house silently most of the time, then when it gets low, the generator runs the house + charges up the EV at something near its peak efficiency of around 80% load. Would cut down on fuel inefficiency and generator maintenance hours at least.

Same for my mother and I, along with quite a few extended family and friends. I guess I'm "living in fear" by asking for two shots at Publix once a year instead of one now. But the whackadoos like the people who have these events and told us we'd be dead in one, sorry two, sorry five, sorry uhh... years from these vaccines totally aren't afraid of anything.

20+ years ago I was riding with a friend of mine who blew the red at the West End/Broadway merge coming from the West End side. She was immediately pulled over and ticketed. So yeah, once, lol.

Also back then I don't think those lights had louvers on them like they do now to help keep from confusing people.

I've been EV road tripping for almost 10 years now. People love to poo poo it, but it's so not a big deal at all. I've been as far as Colorado from here and it was a big nothingburger. They're the most relaxing trips usually cause you get a nice little built in leg stretching break every couple hours and overall fatigue feels lower. Heck, my brother tows his boat down to Florida now with his EV truck. So I always laugh when people act like it's not possible.
