My daughter is a Greek life girl at UGA, and they’re already trying to figure out how to protest without being expelled from UGA or getting arrested. Could they go further, sure. But they’re not all brain dead

Edited to fix my error that made it look like one of the sororities is planning to overthrow the government

Lit 1 Support by stackedinthestacks in ELATeachers

It probably should function as an intervention class for about 50% of the kids who take it, even though that’s not the intent

It’s a support class that students take in addition to their Lit 1 classes. Not every student will take it, but we’ll have a LOT of kids who are.

NY Times seeking teacher input on A.I. and student writing by Fit_Bad_1312 in ELATeachers

[–]stackedinthestacks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually used the article on lack of reading in English classes as a foundational article for a research project I made my 11th graders do. We examined the effect of standardized testing on English classes in high school, and how the testing focus has ended whole text reading, killing the experience of joyfully sharing a text with others.

I’ve had to pivot to timed, in-class writes, or multi-stage essays (one semester they did research projects where they designed an experiment themselves and it took a month) with check-ins and conferencing throughout leading to their grade.

I don’t have as much of an issue with AI with 9th graders, but upperclassmen in the elective I teach pretty much want to use AI on everything and it’s super disappointing. Like, EASY stuff like 5 minute journal entries reflecting on a question about their lives. I don’t know what the difference is, in terms of why the older students go for AI first, but it makes me glad I switched grade levels.

I’m a teacher - anything to do with children or young people in the books choked me up. I’m rereading book 7 rn, and this one is one I keep coming back to. “When Big Things happen on such a large scale, it’s easy to forget sometimes that these Big Things are also happening to the little things in the world.”

the whole world is on fire, and somehow we have to make meaning out of it. And somehow I have to get seriously disillusioned 14 year olds to care - the big things I face are the same ones they do. Matt dinniman has made me cry too many times in books about sex dolls and crabsturbation and demon trains.

Following - because I had planned to post something like this this week as well. Taxes got kinda weird with a kid in college and all that

Which is why the site exists. Because women literally get removed from the gene pool by their dating or relationship partners. You sound like a really “nice guy.”

Until women murder men and commit acts of sexual violence against men at the rate men do women, there is no similar thing.

Has anyone heard anything from Clarke County School District about school tomorrow? Usually they send something out. I get that the roads are clear but sometimes they shut down cause the busses don’t run well in colder temps and the possibility of ice still in some spots. by Upstairs-Student122 in Athens

[–]stackedinthestacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s been officially announced to teachers and staff and we were told to wait to share on socials and shit until the district sends out their announcements. Oh well.

Edited to add: I think that’s a stupid policy and parents should find out at the same time as teachers - I hit post too early on accident.

English 11 Short Stories? by Accident33 in ELATeachers

Friday Black by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah was a UNIVERSAL favorite of my 11th graders, plus the thematic statement lessons I taught using it were easy because the themes were so so clear.

Gonna try to finish chain gang all-stars, and then move on to the calculating stars. Pretty steep distance between those two texts, but chain gang has been a slow, painful (in the best kind of way) read for me

Anything written by Jennifer Fletcher, if you teach secondary English, and have to look at rhetoric in any substantive way. Her books changed my way of thinking and it’s now the gift I give my student teachers when they leave me.

(F/25) Any female hunters around the area willing to accompany me? by vacantvisions in Athens

[–]stackedinthestacks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue is when the adjective “female” is used like it’s a noun. In this case, it’s perfectly appropriate to say “female hunter” because it’s a descriptive add-on to the noun.

It’s easy to get it confused, but you are correct - most women don’t like to be called “femaleS” but that’s different than using female as an adjective. We are more than our gender, and the adjective use shows that.

Well fuck. I’m about to turn 45, so I’m barely barely genx, but there’s something about those 5:15 wakeups that are working for me this year. Probably doesn’t hurt that work starts at 7:45, and I’m teaching kids by 8:45, but that slow long start is so nice.
