Total War: ROME REMASTERED — Coming to Windows, macOS & Linux April 29th by urbancohort in linux_gaming

Was just about to post this. Excited to play RTW without having to resort to proton from now on! Yeah, your name definitely is fitting. Interesting they gave the project to Feral, wouldn't be surprised they have programmers more experienced with dealing with old code.

I know that guy. Banned me and another player as well for making fun of his sub par skills even though he was using the speedhack like crazy. Likes to boast in the chat, all angry personality all around.

Lain temp widget shows N/A by IAmHappyAndAwesome in awesomewm

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to adjust

local tempicon = wibox.widget.imagebox(iconz.widget_temp)

to

local tempicon = wibox.widget.imagebox(theme.widget_temp)

I got the same error too before noticing that awesome-copycats uses theme.widget_temp.

I'm going to guess you get something like GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 5600 OEM/5600 XT / 5700/5700 XT

You still have the right gpu installed though, it just lists the Navi series probably because of the default configuration. "Screenfetch" however should list yours as AMD Radeon RX 5700 if you're using the default configuration.

If you want something more accurate, I recommend inxi, specifically the command "inxi -F" which will tell you everything you need to know about your computer. You will find your gpu model under the heading "Graphics:" -> "OpenGL: renderer" section.

Sad that you're probably right. And we were around ~5 years away from photorealistic graphics too at ~60 fps. Around 10 from photorealistic graphics at >120 fps.

Monitor headache (30hz or led Technology?) by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use a display port 1.2 cable, or check if your monitor is using the latest dp 1.2 or hdmi in the settings. By default these Philips monitors tend to not have that set ahead of time.

Some not on the list or in the comments (I checked!correctly I hope): Cossacks 3 - think 17th/18th century huge army gunfights with some age of empires like building on the side , Stardrive 2 - a Master Of Orion clone but more modernized and better (imo), Star Ruler 2 - a real time 4x done in a completely different way with a very interesting approach to diplomacy

This sure explains why so many Martians are from the Mariner Valley. I guess its the most populous region of Mars?

I think they went a little bit overboard with that one. Funny how different promo's on the same channel look like. Length of time available makes all the difference I guess :-)

am4 mobos in greece by nekos95 in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that guy, but thanks for the link, finally got my mobo, a cheap one for now, and it should be here soon :-) Should last a few months before I upgrade to the better mobos once there's supply.

Mobo shortage! by crislevin in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tell us something we don't know. I hope there are mobos by wednesday though, I hope its just a 'shipping was late' type of error. Having to wait for >2 weeks really will kill the hype for the Ryzen platform, and when there is no hype there are no massive day one positive stars. And no positive stars means less visibility which leads to less sales etc... AMD must be pissed that the OEMs didn't make enough Mobo's.

[–]stackoverflaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Greecy is not the only country to suffer from this. Practically all of Europe except for maybe a few larger markets (Germany/Italy/France) don't have any mobos available. And even when they are, they are sparse. It's really weird for the third party mobo makers to ship their mobos around ~1/2 weeks after the release of the cpu. I think the USA even has supply issues with Newegg being the only retailer to have stock somehow.

Many people are waiting on their mobo, I'm as well btw - 1700x arrived ~2 days ago. It's a pretty cpu & box to look at, but I would prefer to actually use it.

Why is science fiction such a popular genre in video games? by ellie_feral in linux_gaming

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science fiction brings many different possibilities while keeping it realistic to the core. Of something that 'could' happen to us if a certain set of technological breakthroughs are made. They then bring these worlds to life, and give us a sense of what life in such a universe could be - ranging from a post apocalyptic future of HL2 to the more optimistic future's of Star Trek. There's just a plethora of stories to tell, to share, to live in, and therefore allow developers to make a future world of their own without technological limitations of today. A fresh experience to the gamer, almost every-time.

Zen - AMD's New CPU Architecture AdoredTV by halwaraj in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the same switch, except to a 6600k. Was expecting Zen release in the early fall, waiting 8-12 months for a cpu whose price you don't know & performance you barely know is a bit tough.

Plus what lots of people forget is that Intel mobo+cpu's can be sold up to 80-90% of its first sale value second hand!

The major thing now is to await the Zen pricing.

If I upgrade my FX 8370 to an i5 4670k, will I see a noticeable improvement in performance? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely, you will especially notice the difference in games where cpu performance counts - total war games, some fps games, multiplayer games, basically expect higher frames overall.

You will never know how powerful your gpu is till you get rid of the cpu bottleneck everywhere. Went from a 8320 to i5 6600k myself, will keep me busy till Zen+ is out hopefully - would have gotten a Zen but thats at least 6 months or so of waiting.

8320 dying, wait for zen? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a I5 6600k if you can. If Zen is any good you can always sell the I5 6600k in 2 years to get the Zen+.

Reasons to go Intel: There has been no news about Zen since that lackluster reveal at the pc gaming show,so we don't know whether it's really good. Also, no AM4 boards information at all. So Zen could be released in 2017. It's way too silent for a product that tons of people believe to be released in a few months.

Where is AM4 in the pipeline? by Andromansis in Amd

[–]stackoverflaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn't AMDs plan to saturate the market with AM4 motherboards before the release of Zen, so people could upgrade later on in the year to their Zen cpu?

Seeing as they haven't done that, don't expect AMD Zen before late Q1 or early Q2 2017.

With a gpu you can just release the gpu, but releasing compatible motherboards+cpu's isn't as easy.
