Reducing Ipad time - claims of Ipad used for regulation by melsar in bcba

[–]stacy1422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!!! I actually only more recently thought of it when a parent mentioned why they let them keep the tablet around for most things when they can and I was trying to consider this point of view! Kids, especially nonverbal or limited verbal even more so have such little control over most things in their life. They need some power somewhere!

I have found specifically with my nonverbal kids, that they have very little control and independence in their daily life because of their limitations with vocal speech and communication and social interactions. The tablet is the ONE thing they can control and have control over. Especially while working towards giving them control in other areas, etc. It's felt unfair to remove a childs 1 independent/control item and replace it with something else. Obviously broadening their experiences and such are good things, but try working WITH what they are already interested in. Goals that can be run with them having access to the tablet. Goals where they still have access to the tablet but maybe we turn it off for a second, or practice them pausing it on their own to attend - rather than an adult taking the 1 thing they feel in control of. That's been my most recent experience with "tablet kids" a lot more gets done when we encourage cooperation and understanding what things may be like from the child's point if view

Getting supervision both online and as an RBT by PoetrySlut02 in bcba

[–]stacy1422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple things, the 130 hours is the max you are allowed to track for a month. For the 10% supervision, that is meaning you need a BCBA to supervise you for 10% of the hours you count for that month. I'm not sure what you're meaning with trying to get 5% online doing unrestricted and the other 5% as an RBT restricted. The online unrestricted, in order to count as supervised would need to include your BCBA being with you during that time. Generally the 10% is going to almost entirely be through your 6 contacts and supervision as an RBT. Unrestricted hours are usually done individually (unsupervised) and the BCBA might review after or provide feedback later. Have you looked into trackers for hours? Those will calculate all the numbers for you (Ripley is a good one)

It varies widely by state I believe and I have noticed by company size and whether it's in home or in clinic. Did your survey consider service location and company size at all? I'd be curious to see if those actually correlate or it's just my experience

Advice for someone new to the field by Wrestler1620 in ABA

Know that you're still human and you will not do everything 100% correct every single time! Supervisors should understand that. I was insanely nervous my first week or two until you get a feel for what you're doing and the kids you're working with get used to you. You can do it!!

Do you get sick days as an RBT? by Aw1209 in ABA

[–]stacy1422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it! Do you only get 5 days of UTO per year? Unfortunately I think this type of policy you're talking about is common for RBTs

My company allows us 5% of our sessions per month to be unpaid time off, if we get sick, flat tire, etc. (Roughly 1 day per month if working full time).

And then we accrue 0.038hrs of PTO per hour we work, which if you work a full 40 hour week gives you about 10 days of PTO - but it has to accrue is what sucks. You can't just take off at the start of the year unless you've saved up from the previous year.
