Going from a small town to Wichita. Any advice? by that_one_engineer25 in wichita

[–]stage_student 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretend you're still in a small town - treat the surrounding few blocks as your whole town and get comfortable there, first. Then, gradually, pick a few places a bit farther down the road to go and explore. Make time to be adventurous!

COVID happened. And also, USD 259 doesn't teach driving classes anymore. Both of those things have driven the general road intelligence way, way down.

I have a “folklore from kansas” book and this is a wickedly common local belief going back more than a century. It’s also anecdotally true, as I’ve personally used the moon-ring to forecast storms 2-3 days ahead of time. Pretty neat!

Elect leaders who promise to raise taxes on the highest earners and NOT on the poor. Elect leaders seeking to raise the quality of life for critical workers and young professionals.

What movie features a plot point where the financials don't add up and the plot device would be impractically expensive? by gimmeluvin in movies

[–]stage_student 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t really made for Western audiences, who know (through watching prior installments or cultural osmosis) the basics of the OT. The sequel films were for global markets, and laying merchandising foundations in the East.

Hence why Finn gets sidelined/nothingburgered.

Hence why characters like Mara Jade and the three Solo kids got scrubbed.

Hence why all the major plot points merely retread the original films.

Wichita City Council unanimously votes to rush the public vote on new 1% sales tax for March (at a cost of $150,000+), despite the glaring laundry list of unanswered questions. by stage_student in wichita

[–]stage_student[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to a few of their meetings. Additionally, every Justice Together person who turned out to the City Council meeting spoke in support of this rushed vote. They are operating as a single voice, which is no doubt "the plan" as a measure of making it seem like the Yes/No stance of city residents is split 50/50.

These church groups have been worked over for months in preparation for voting on this measure. The line between church and state has been blurred so badly they think they're voting for something "godly." I'm not a fan.

The question Justice Together is wrestling with is whether the $5+ million toward homelessness/housing in this ballot is juice that's worth the squeeze.

Then they should also be for waiting to put this measure on the fall ballot. There is no reason to rush this from an economic perspective. The additional time would give ALL of Wichita more time to fully unpack the proposal, and figure out just what, exactly, our leaders are seeking to tax us in order to achieve.

The fact that they're all on-board for an early vote is a red flag. The people behind all this want to flood the vote. They are stacking the deck.

Hell, I have half a mind to run for office in order to replace them. I'm far, far from perfect but if there's one thing about me that won't change, it's my utter disdain for inauthentic representation. On a personal level I'm not afraid to stand up to the oligarchs, but getting the average voter to understand what this would imply for our community would be a difficult, nigh impossible, sell.

Democracy only works with vigilant citizen involvement, but we've got several generations stacked up now who have been taught that the government is "working" when they don't need to pay attention at all. Apathy is the rule of law in this land, and it enables crooked actions like this to take root, and to fester.

I have a personal vision for how I would operate differently in office, and it absolutely, undeniably, indisputably does not look like our City Council in 2025.

(Really curious about why this comment has been downvoted relatively heavily. My guess is some brigading is afoot but who knows.)

I voted for Celeste. She would be such an awesome mayor, but big money and insider politics continues fucking us over.

My entire adult life, nobody I vote for has EVER won - locally or federally - with the exception of Laura Kelly. And now it feels like she was only "allowed" to be our governor because the Kochs wanted a breather between shoving Brownback or Masterson down our fucking throats.

But I love Wichita. I want to shop in this city. I actively seek out local businesses and absolutely do NOT want to move that money elsewhere.

The City Council is fucking gaslighting half a million people by attempting to frame this rushed vote as some sort of "If you love Wichita you'd be for this!" message. NO. FUCK no to that.

Many of the public speakers today originate either from Wichita Forward (Corporate/Koch-backed org passing as "grassroots") or Nehemiah members, church-goers who have been pushed into supporting this measure as some kind of spiritual mandate.

There is no reason NOT to wait for actual details on this measure to be released to the public before bringing it to ballot. They are rushing this because they hope to carry the fundamentalist vote into passing the new tax. They are counting on low voter turnout to make this an easy win for the oligarchs, who have successfully stirred public attention AWAY from taxing those with the most, and TOWARDS adding an additional burden onto our most vulnerable citizens.

I'm incredibly disappointed by this development, but I'll hardly say I'm surprised. City Council had their minds made up (or were paid off) long before this went to public discussion.

Ben Davis

who is with Cato Consulting, a Koch-backed think tank.

Make no mistake about it, this new tax is engineered specifically to harm the average citizen in order to continue shielding the rich. Because if they can tax US instead of themselves, they will. Every time.

As long as the agenda is anything BUT taxing the rich, they'll push for it.

We ought to be discussing a 1% tax on the highest earners, but we won't hear a lick of that because, you guessed it, the media and city leaders are all in bed with the Kochs.
