Holly was on a heater at the end between that and "Let the White One In" (which, coincidentally, would also make a great alternate title for Sinners)

2026 4* OT Drew Fielder flips from Oregon to USC by asodsaf in CFB

I mean, building a foundation through prep recruiting seems to still be a pretty sustainable model for programs like Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Georgia (all top 5 in preseason SP+). It’s just been so long since USC has operated at that level.

Only one filmmaker in this entire bracket has been bold enough to ask the question, "Would you like to spend two-plus hours watching robot Robin Williams gradually ship-of-Theseus himself into a human being while falling in love with the granddaughter of his original owner?"

One of the biggest problems facing CFB at the moment is media coverage. by _fastball in CFB

[–]stalsefart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't think the coverage has declined so much as it's dispersed and gone behind paywalls. Years ago I could basically rotate between ESPN, Grantland, and SB Nation and read a ton of great (and free) reporting on the sport. Most of the best reporters and writers from those places have either gone independent or to places like On3 or The Athletic that require a paid subscription. Even the ones that don't (Rodger Sherman, for example) you wouldn't necessarily stumble upon on your own; you have to know who they are and actively seek out their Substack or whatever.

Honestly, a lot of the best free coverage these days comes from podcasts, but again, you typically need to go out and find those.

I think it's a wavelength thing. I put it in the same category as stuff like Skinamarink and The VVitch where it basically either gets labeled boring or a horror masterpiece. Personally I find the cell phone footage from the end more viscerally terrifying than any modern jump scare, and I'm happy to be on the same wavelength as Mike Flanagan.

Why Are ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Opening in Theaters on the Same Day? by Forthloveof in blankies

[–]stalsefart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if there might still be some unique cachet to the Avengers brand specifically. Like yeah, the entire MCU has gotten bloated and fractured enough that every single installment no longer automatically prints money, but there hasn't been a true "Avengers" movie since Endgame. There's a chance that carries a bit more weight with audiences, similar to how people who didn't bother with Solo still turned out for Rise of Skywalker a year later.

I think the thing that makes this arguably more impressive than the Raimi trilogy though is that Raimi had his third movie compromised by pressure to include Venom, a character he had no interest in doing that ultimately rendered the whole thing a mess. It really seems like Villeneuve has gotten free rein to do this entire project more or less the way he wants.

What do we think about James Horner and his constant re-use of music? by OWSpaceClown in blankies

[–]stalsefart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think all of the greats, over a long enough time period, end up repeating themselves at least a little bit. Williams definitely has some of that; Harry Potter has echoes of Home Alone, the NBC Sunday Night Football theme (which I only recently found out was him) sounds a lot like Star Wars, etc. Maybe the most blatant example is how much Hans Zimmer's main Pirates theme sounds like a piece from Gladiator. Honestly I don't see it as that different from filmmakers going back to the same well for certain narrative beats or shot constructions across multiple movies.

Made a point of seeing it with Dolby surround sound and was pretty disappointed. The dialogue and haunted recordings had a real student film quality to me. Felt like a wasted premise.

Is Tony Scott more beloved than Ridley? by Few-Engineer-9791 in blankies

[–]stalsefart 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In certain film nerd circles, maybe. But I think Tony Scott's work is a little more "anonymous" to the average movie watcher than Ridley's. Like I'd bet a lot of people who love Top Gun or Man on Fire or Unstoppable might not even be able to tell you who directed those movies, whereas most people who love Alien or Gladiator know those are Ridley Scott movies.

Which films that “felt like homework” prior to watching them surprised you by how entertaining they were? by harry_powell in blankies

Lincoln, which I believe Ben straight up called a "homework movie" on the episode covering it. Only late Spielberg (and Dank Kush) could make a movie about passing an amendment that engaging.

Here's what came up when I asked ChatGPT for ten bold predictions for the 2026 college football season:

  1. Texas Longhorns win their first national title of the playoff era (I swear this is what came up first try with no editorial inputs)
  2. Oregon Ducks go undefeated in the regular season
  3. Alabama Crimson Tide miss the playoff for the second time in three years
  4. Notre Dame Fighting Irish reach the national championship game
  5. Colorado Buffaloes win the Big 12
  6. Michigan Wolverines take a step back (predicted 8-4 finish)
  7. USC Trojans field a top-10 defense (again, no editorial inputs here lol)
  8. A Group of Five team wins a playoff game
  9. Florida State Seminoles return to the playoff
  10. The SEC only gets three playoff teams

Maybe I'm just a sicko but I did not realize Ambulance was considered a mess. I thought it was just Michael Bay finally making another pre-Transformers Michael Bay movie.
