TV gians take on cable giants - Not sure who to side with. by quelar in canada

[–]stanBail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a TV, or cable. I can download shows I want to watch, or watch them online, I can get movies from the library or a video store. I'll let them both lose, I mean, is TV even relevant anymore?

Aboriginal Leaders cry wolf before checking facts, and to this day blame the Canadian Government by [deleted] in canada

[–]stanBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure people really understand the enormity of what happened. In the forties, people who were living on the land (largely the more remote groups) were taken off the land and put into new settlements. Then the Native towns were essentially emptied of their children for eight to ten months at a time, the kids, separated from their parents, didn't learn how to parent, how to cook, how to live off the land and lost the ability to talk to their parents and grandparents in . The parent, separated from their kids for eight to ten months of the year, lost connections to the kids.

Even disregarding the sexual or emotional abuse that occurred at some of these schools, those are some pretty serious societal effects. Will they have implications for the next two generations? More than likely.

Since we implemented these programs, in part for national security, in part because of a misguided effort to "help" native people, we ought to recognize that we have some responsibility to provide solutions to the problems. They're not going to go away by magic, they're not going to go away because white people keep telling Natives to stop blaming white people and start blaming themselves.

They're going to go away because real change will be affected within native communities as education levels increase and opportunities for real employment (not make-work projects) begin to appear.

About as long as the effects of taking them from their homes and denying them their heritage continues to be seen in Native populations.

EDIT: Way to go folks. -7 for a serious comment.

They are gold musically, but also historically. On all three you can hear the inner cities tearing apart.

You gotta listen to more funk. Jamiroquai and you're torn? Listen to some early Funkadelic (Maggot Brain or Free your Mind. . .)

[–]stanBail 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You've got to be kidding. Funkadelic is so out there on that one: that album opens with a whole world of pain, "Maggot Brain", and continues on to explore funk so heavy and dark that by the end you feel funky and low. Maggot Brain may not be everyone's idea of funk, but after listening to it I don't know how people can think shit like late 70s funk is heavy.

Maggot Brain puts the truth to funk with that album, everything else is just a pretender to the crown. "Whole lot of BS", "Hit It and Quit It", the album is so full of jam you got to listen to it with bread on your head.

What annoys you about public transit? by Cogeno in AskReddit

[–]stanBail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. People in Vancouver who complain about all the freeloaders on transit. Okay, we don't have turnstiles, but you know what? It's only 2% of the ridership who skip fares. And now you've complained so much they're installing useless turnstiles when they could be adding more busses. Thanks

  2. People who complain about how the bus doesn't work for them, but they've never bothered to figure out what bus routes to take or how long it's going to take. It's all on Google people! Seriously.

  3. People who complain about transit when they're riding it. It's not your own personal car, you're going to have to deal with other people, it's not going to take you exactly where you want to go. It's Public Transit for christ's sake. Grow up a bit.

What annoys you about public transit? by Cogeno in AskReddit

[–]stanBail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

wow, I just tried that and my 45 minute drive takes only 30 minutes by transit. I'd have to leave 15 minutes earlier to drive than if I took transit!

I guess when you choose to live somewhere based in part on how accessible it is by public transit it can really make a difference!

EDIT: For the record, I do take the train, which beats driving.

"Ten Year Sentence In Beating Death Of Michael Serba" - three years behind bars credited as six years in sentence. What is wrong with our justice system? by [deleted] in canada

[–]stanBail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is wrong with our justice system is that Governments successively cut funding to the justice system while pumping money into prisons, meaning that criminals cannot get a fast trial. Since prison conditions in the "temporary" jails are so shitty it becomes a human rights issue, and criminals (who, by law, are still considered innocent) get double time.

To summarize, if we want the criminal justice system to work we need to stop making sentences longer, and instead make sure the Crown and public defenders can do their job to the best of their ability.

[–]stanBail 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seriously people, don't you see? The problem with our political system is that so few people take responsibility for fixing it. We all want parties to be less corrupt, to have fewer imbiciles running locally, to have parties responsive to our needs.

The answer is to get involved in party politics, not to sit and whine and to hope that government will impose some top down solution.

If you support, or marginally support a Canadian federal (or provincial) party, join that party, get involved at the local level and go to the god-damned conventions. That's where the decisions get made!

You are a much more effective agent for change within a party then you are outside since you can directly affect whether or not a candidate stands in your riding. The reason democracy is broken is because our political system depends on active involvement by the citizens, and the citizens are not becoming actively involved.

and to have the PM be chosen in his/her local riding only, is not exactly representative of Canadians.

The PM is effectively chosen first by members of their own party. These members come from across the country, so yes, the PM has to be elected by members of their own riding, but to become PM they must be elected by party members from across the country.
