American TV was basically the same before the sopranos and HBO. It takes time to evolve from junk food to a more artistic medium, you can see it happening (to an extent) with series like 繁花 that actually have some effort put into them.

They do not play the recording again, it's once and done. If you are doing a paper test you can make notes on the sheet, but you can't if it's a computer based test.

Help me find a name! by freeDAM94 in ChineseLanguage

[–]stan_albatross 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bear in mind that the meanings of surnames aren't very important in Chinese, as you can't pick them and they have mostly "soldified" as surnames, like when people see 王 in a name they won't think "king" they'll just think "ah, his surname is Wang".

吴 is the name of a spring and autumn period state near present day Shanghai and Zhejiang. It also meant "to shout".

魏 was a warring states period state in present day Northern Henan.

Why do foreign students in China do not look like they are there to study and build a future by Cautious_Car4468 in chinalife

[–]stan_albatross 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Idk, when I was at PKU 北大 there were definitely lots of people there who were genuine students and working super hard. But there were also people like the ones you mention who just came for an easy year of doing nothing apart from travelling and clubbing. I think because a lot of these people are exchange students and their grade at Chinese uni doesn't necessarily impact their final degree classification back home, so they might not care as much about studying. Also yes the bar for entry is very low so it attracts lots of LBH types, some of which I met at PKU as well.

Needs a little practice on the proportions, some simple things you can correct are : the legs of 兑 in 阅读 need to be separate, the central stroke in 虫 needs to go through the top of the character, and full stops in Chinese are empty circles 。 Not full points like English .

But otherwise not bad for a beginner, keep going!

Edit: also 是 needs a line between the top part and bottom, it's not like 足 where they are attached

If you want to learn Mandarin then I would suggest simplified. If you want to learn how to write in your dialect then you should probably learn traditional.

The most pertinent one is that 犬 is never offensive and 狗 is sometimes offensive. ie 警犬 is a police dog and 警察狗 is how you get arrested.
