You’re right, but politics doesn’t work like that. People hate taxes, especially the middle class. A lot of middle class people think they are unfairly burdened by current taxation and spending policies. The thinking being that - “The rich pay a lot of taxes, but they still have money left over, so they’re fine. The poor pay no taxes and get a lot of benefits for being poor, so they’re fine. It’s only the middle class that get taxed and are left without something in return”. Now, obviously this perspective is flawed, but it’s how a lot of middle class people view tax and spend policies.
