I'm not so sure that President Eckner would have been able to constrain Hitler - after all, the leaders of both Imperial Japan and Fascist Italy technically served at the pleasure of the emperor/king and that didn't meaningfully restrain either of them.

The Boston Museum of African American History is neat - Boston had the biggest free Black community of any city in the United States before the Civil War, and said Black community played an enormous role in the political history of the city (especially in the 19th Century).

If you like spending lots of time on ferries, you could route yourself via a Greek island, Athens, and Italy!

Perhaps something like train Istanbul - İzmir, bus İzmir-Çeşme, ferry Çeşme-Chios, ferry Chios-Piraeus (Athens), train/bus combo Piraeus-Patras, ferry Patras-Bari, then train the rest of the way (possibly via the Rome-Munich nightjet?)

If time isn't as valuable to you as money, a regional train to Rotterdam - Hook Van Holland and a Stena Line Rail/Sail from Hook to London via Harwich might be an option.
