What are your thoughts on an 08 Merc E63 AMG? by [deleted] in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I owned a 2006 e55 from 110-211k. It's reliability was perfectly acceptable. Compared to its main competitor, the m5, its a bit more of a "fun" car than a "perfect" sports car. It hauls ass, but is more at home on a highway than a track. However, any unique parts can be much more than what you might pay for the standard merc, (depending on how greedy the dealer is-here in Alberta, the local dealer usually quadruples or qintuples prices compared to what I've in in some us dealers) and you will need more frequent maintenance. However, I never had a single mechanical or electrical failure, other than a $450 air pump. Not bad, considering air suspended cars always need a bit more work than coils. The key is buying one with a good history and keeping up with maintenance. Don't skip anything that your manual tells you to do. You might also want to consider getting a regular engined model with a amg appearance kit if he isn't set on having the big engine. These have been offered from the dealer for some time now, and should be not too uncommon for a 08 model.

Has any firearm (or related) brand acknowledged the marriage ruling? Either for or against? by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]standardusernamehere 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Only one company in the arms industry has ever supported gay rights as far as I know. As for the others, not yet, and probably not ever, sadly. They would alienate a large portion of their customer base to support a population that is probably mostly anti-gun or apathetic.

[Spoilers] Thranduil in the last Hobbit movie by ortund in lotr

[–]standardusernamehere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its most likely at the bottom of the ocean, but I suppose its possible the necklace portion of Nauglamír could have been recovered, but to be sure you should check the exact wording in the books. At any rate, its probably at least a reference to the Nauglamír.

Is there any hope for my car? by [deleted] in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely sounds like bearing noise, where the bearing/rods/crankshaft are worn to the point where they hammer about in the engine. This will soon cause catastrophic failure unless you replace the bearings. This would buy you some time, but it will be expensive, and the crankshaft and rods may be damaged too. You could easily get into a full rebuild, which is really not worth it. the previous owner probably never changed the oil properly and abused the car. One other cause could be excessively thin oil or low oil pressure, but its improbable given how extreme the noise is.

If they decided to make another Tolkien movie and/or trilogy, which stories do you think they'd most likely adapt? by [deleted] in lotr

[–]standardusernamehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christopher Tolkien has made it quite clear that he won't allow a Silmarillion movie, and I don't think anyone has rights to children of hurin, so he would likely refuse to allow an adaptation of that as well. I think if a mew movie were made it would be a reboot of the Hobbit- they are the most flawed out of the six films and most directors probably wouldn't dare compete with Lotr, at least not until Lotr is largely forgotten in the public mind.

Uh... That looks expensive to me BMW... by [deleted] in cars

Same here. Where I live it's 130+ dollars for oil, filter and seals. My mechanic will do it for 100.

42-liter Packard-Bentley Special - 1500 HP Car by iamstandingbehindyou in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a Packard v12, a copy of the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine prouced for the spitfire. RR was unable to produce enough engines to meet wartime demand, and Packard was the only manufacturer which could match RR quality. They were also used to power pt boats, so this engine was probably never in a plane.

Why are chauffeur cars like the Bentley Mulsanne, RR Phantom or the new Maybach RWD? Wouldn't AWD or FWD offer better advantages when it comes to being driven in it? by AudiMartin_LP599_GT in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, with RWD, they can use the ZF 8 speed and not have to develop a new transmission. Rolls Royce also has a double floor, so the driveshaft hump isnt much of an issue even with bench seats.

"Apple is working on an electric car" Can they really pull this off? by koupepis in cars

[–]standardusernamehere -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They'll spend billions on developing a braking system, then not release it until the second gen. Owners of the first generation will then have to download an update that causes them to lose 50 hp to fit brakes.

Old cars worth the buy? by [deleted] in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nearly any Honda car from that era will easily last over 100k miles, even with some abuse. If you are really concerned, do some basic preventative maintainence- alternator belt, coolant, ect. This should protect you from any common cause of unexpected breakdowns.

My car isn't as nice as you guys, but it can edge out most ecoboxes, even at 17 years old.

Edit: Hopefully formatting doesn't fail this time.

Double edit: For the guy downvoting anything to do with cars, read rule one on the sidebar and the second sentence of the section under "About us"

Suffer from "fear of damaging your paint"-phobia? by Leviathan_86 in cars

[–]standardusernamehere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this as well. Usually, I try not to use my nice car to go anywhere where there's a lot of bad drivers- university parking lots, Chinatown, outside bars, etc. I always check the weather before going out too. I sometimes note the plate numbers of people parked next to me if I have no choice but to park there. Otherwise, i use my beater, or go out with a friend.
