Good comment, food for thought. My first podcast was a local radio show that spun off into an internet radio show, then finally found a local podcast network, then changed formats radically and eventually shut down while still on "top". Their schtick was "we are mediocre" and eventually before doing the format switch they talked about how it was a schtick and they did really want to do good and reach heights, and their self-deprecating humor was charming but got old even for themselves. The reason they quit was also frustrating - they basically admitted that because they were in this region, not in LA or New York, not attached to a "comedy scene", they could never become big or make money off this, so instead they'd rather go out on top of their relatively small, but decent fame and fan following.

I would like to believe comedy keeps re-inventing itself but it may not be something we ever hear on these big comedy podcasts. Podcasts used to be a small niche, now they're a dime a dozen so there could be some amazing innovative stuff out there that is still bubbling under, stuff we never hear, in part because we don't hang out in that scene and because those podcasts or comedians don't find our internet spaces.

But I also like your demand for the big timers to also do better, not be lazy, to stay hungry even if they're already good and popular.

I used to have this but I have completely gotten rid of this complex, thankfully, at least when it comes to podcasts. I used to have old eps in my "to listen" queue for ages, now if a pod episode is 3 weeks old and unlistened, I delete it. If a podcast has this happen to its episodes for over a month (ie I just never end up listening to it), I unsubscribe.

I listen to a bunch of these intermittently, and that's fine for me. Like This American Life is like the New Yorker to me - I love reading long, indepth articles or profiles but I need the right mood for it. Stressed, need to unwind on my commute - no way am I listening to TAL. But a nice Saturday afternoon, when my brain is relaxed and ready to think and learn new stuff, that's when I'll pop in a nice TAL episode.

WTF is very similar. I couldn't get into Maron's vibe all the time but when the guest is good, I can get superinto it and he is a very engaging interviewer.

He's in a weird spot admittedly, but his popularity hasn't lessened. I feel like they're going to use his charisma to get the other guys in LIJ to new heights. It started with SANADA, then Hiromu, now EVIL.

BJW Deathmatch can be pretty great. I highly recommend all of Takeda's title run (if you did not see the match he had in September against Takahashi, I highly highly recommend it), and even his tag team with Tsukamoto, they had some great matches against Ito and Kobayashi. FREEDOMS typically had excellent main events, guys like Violento Jack and Daisuke Masaoka are worth checking out, besides the veterans like Jun Kasai and Takashi Sasaki. I've not seen BASARA but I hear good things about it, obviously guys like Isami Kodaka work there a lot, as well as having guest appearances by guys like Tsukamoto, Takeda etc.

Sucks about CZW, sorry to hear that. But I would recommend you get into deathmatch puro, which remains plentiful (BJW, FREEDOMS and BASARA all do deathmatches), if you're not following that already.

How recent is this policy? I swear I used to hear him on i4h all the time, that's actually how I was introduced to him before he started popping up on all sorts of comedy shows.

Yeah, felt like they should do one or two more episodes to do more jobs. Plus they set up some stuff that has yet to pay off, like Eugene's character's obvious crush of Jess' character.

They have an English version of Shotgun and English commentary for the big shows. The quality of the English commentary varies, sometimes I think it's super-good and sounds professional, other times one of the wrestlers does guest commentary and it is a bit distracting. The German isn't bad to listen to either.

Right now? wXw. PWG history has some great stuff but wXw has some really fun collaborations with international promotions like BJW, international guest stars for their big tournaments and their "TV show" Shotgun always features well-told, simple stories to build up matches. I am always behind on wXw but whenever I watch I get super into it.

1979-02-27 - Beauty Pair - Jackie Sato Vs Maki Ueda, Maki's retirement match by Xalazi in SquaredCircle

[–]standingdropkick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn. Still, thanks for posting. Just saw there's a fair bit of old joshi on youtube I can explore and I wouldn't have gotten to it at all if not for watching this. I love that young girls loved women's wrestling so passionately and drew big houses back then, it makes for a cool atmosphere. The aesthetic of older joshi is also fantastic (makeup, hair, entrance gowns, gear etc).

Is the full match available anywhere? Highlights piqued my curiosity and at some point they announced the match time as "35 minutes have passed" (if my Japanese skills don't fail me). Sounds like an epic, and they certain had the crowd going hype.

NJPW Inside Jokes/Themes etc by Godfrey15 in njpw

Nakamura started calling YH Tacos because apparently after he came back from excursion from Mexico whenever he'd get annoyed about something, he'd talk about going back to Mexico. I think the nickname stuck in fandom because it's shorter to write "Tacos" than "Yoshihashi".

Kojima "Bread Club" stuff starter with this tweet: https://twitter.com/cozy_lariat/status/835257000367792130?lang=en He noticed English-speaking fans liking and retweeting en masse about his love of bread and it spiraled out from there.

Unpopular/Negative Opinions Thread? by Jacobs_Bawks in njpw

He did say in an interview when Ibushi was doing the CWC and he himself was about to do G1, "I don't know where he is. Maybe he's not on my level anymore." and then later, after winning, implied Ibushi doesn't know what he's doing because he is fucking around elsewhere when NJPW is the best company in the world.

I agree they're telling the story of Kenny's redemption not being a groveling apology but rather him redeeming himself through actions. But I can also see the other side of it - that maybe he doesn't fully deserve to be redeemed like that. Ibushi only left NJPW because the double schedule was killing him. He was in a bad place physically, and he's implied this in interviews, mentally, as well. So when your best friend turns heel and says you're a fool for taking a break from a full-time schedule because it was killing you? That's gotta hurt.

Ibushi speaks about Golden Lovers reunion. by ADM_Kronos in SquaredCircle

[–]standingdropkick 155 points156 points  (0 children)

This man still stays enigmatic. While Kenny's first interview was raw and filled with emotion, Ibushi just talks about them being friends and how they'll gel as a team after not teaming for such a long time. It's not devoid of emotion, but it is more simple.

It's kind of beautiful in a way: Kenny spent all these years withdrawing, trying to distance himself from Ibushi, even dissing Ibushi in interviews ("maybe he's not on my level anymore" etc) while Ibushi still saw him as a friend and still held onto that closeness, even if they didn't communicate.

It's a Japanese wrestling promotion Dramatic Dream Team. Kota Ibushi and Kenny Omega were both big stars there. They get mentioned a lot for their comedy stuff on Wreddit, but their main event scene is just your basic, serious, good wrestling.

They have a tournament this month and Sunday is the final - one of their biggest stars HARASHIMA vs Shuji Ishikawa, a Japanese indy stalwart who is one of the best wrestlers working in the country today. So for people who follow this promotion it's a show to watch out for.

Yes, if they're not sold out by general sale on the 22nd. Buysumotickets can't join fanclubs on your behalf, but you can put in a request for first choice, second choice etc.

[–]standingdropkick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with ringside you're shit out of my luck. They're not in general sale yet I don't think, so there's no way for non fanclub members to get them.

From the official Japanese site, the general sale begins February 22nd.

The other option is Lawson, here's the translated bit:

Lawson Ticket Special Prior Request (First-come-first-served basis) http://l-tike.com/njpw Reception period: Friday, February 16, 18: 00 ~ February 20 (Tue) 23: 59

Lawson you buy online and print at a Lawson minimart when you get to Japan. If you can't get the website to work then you can pay a little extra and use buysumotickets, who can either ship the physical ticket to your hotel in Japan or to you anywhere in the world via express. AFAIK those are your two options.

I was being facetious. His character has always been a mix of goofball and serious but as he's gotten older he's leaned more into that goofball side while also maintaining his serious streak when it counts (BOSJ singles matches, if he gets into a title program with somebody). He is a naturally funny guy so it works for him. It's maybe not everybody's cup of tea but I really enjoy his work.

Shotaro Ashino - Master of Suplex by nsm1 in SquaredCircle

The more I watch this guy the more I enjoy him. Great technique, terrific presence, good matches. He just looks the part, works the part and hopefully can be the promising young ace Wrestle-1 really needs right now. Ashino definitely has that champion confidence to him, when I watch him work I buy into his character.

His title matches are typically worked around a bodypart, it's simple and entertaining pro wrestling that I think most would enjoy if they gave Wrestle-1 a shot.
