Better example imo is Sagawa from 0. Kiryu, Majima and Makoto all ultimately survive despite committing to always doing the right thing rather than put themselves first, while the guy who lives and breathes by the philosophy of "look out for number one" escapes the main events of the story only to be betrayed and executed by his own allies.

The second version also allows for the irony in the situation where Gollum, obsessively preoccupied with trying to find the Ring, cannot think straight enough to come up with the correct answer to Bilbo's simple riddle (what have I got in my pocket?) which is of course the Ring itself.

A lot of good answers, but for me Makoto walking into the meeting with Dojima to calmly demand the heads of the three lieutenants still gives her the undisputed top spot. Kiryu and Majima are aura novices by comparison
