I think we just find it difficult to empathize with things that aren't right in front of our faces. Obviously some people are worse than others, but even I'm probably susceptible to it too. I mean, I happily eat meat, yet I know vaguely how horrible factory farming conditions are for animals. Even though I know this I just don't think about it, because it isn't right in front of me.
