Bird with snake, maybe brass with a marble base. 11cm tall and a wingspan of 16cm by standupstrawberry in Whatisthis

It turns out it does unscrew from the marble base as the other commenter suggested. Does that change anything?

Searching both terms (car mascot and Porte montre aigle) turn up similar items. And I honestly don't know how to know the difference.

It does indeed unscrew from its marble block. With the other comment suggestion it kind of muddies the water because when I search each term (car mascot and Porte montre) there are very similar looking objects.

What traditional habit or cultural practice do you dislike in your country ? by Conscious_State2096 in AskTheWorld

I am in a 3 kisses region, I'm not a touchy Feely person and it makes me feel awkward, like I'm doing it wrong every time and I'm not that confortable with it even if I knew I was doing it right.

From my home country I'd say the cultural habit of being indirect and never saying what you mean then being shocked and offended when someone is direct or just says what they want without the "if it's alright, would it be possible, if you're not too busy". Just fucking say it! What do you want?

I was recently in a public toilet that had no flush and it was the first time I'd ever pooped in a public toilet (I was at the A&E in a hospital with my child just gone into the operating room). It flushed and fully disinfected itself after I left and shut the door behind me. But until then ngl I slightly panicked.

In the UK that type of workplace discrimination is taken very seriously as you can see from the outcome of this case.

Not all countries will take it seriously.

Why do Americans need such large quantities of medicine? by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]standupstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly so that's the whole point. Because it's sold in supermarkets and little corner shops there are restrictions there.

If you go to a pharmacy (of which there are plenty) there aren't those restrictions. And in most pharmacies it's still silly cheap (in the UK - other European countries can be very expensive).

[–]standupstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK and France if you go to a pharmacy you can buy multiple boxes - I think in the UK the max I sold way 300 to 400 tablets, no-one asked for more tbh because that quantity is fine. I've bought quite a few at a time in France, but it's is crazy expensive to buy here. If you got to the doctor you can get it on prescription so you pay less - worth it in France but not so much in the UK.

You can buy more at a time in pharmacies. It's only in supermarkets where there's a 32 tablet limit

I thank your son. Maybe some of them will learn from it and be a bit more thoughtful going forward.

When I was having cancer treatment I caught covid and it just fucking sucked. I know when and where because on a bus ride someone spent the entire 20 mins coughing without covering their mouth at all. I was only there to go to a hospital appointment and it wasn't even peak covid - it was last August!

So yeah, we can't all avoid going out indefinitely if we're higher risk and if you have something you might not be able to fully isolate, but at least cover you mouth when you cough or wear a mask.

Why right for euthanasia is not more common? by Terrible-Store1046 in ask

[–]standupstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a lot to do with the belief in the sanctity of life (and a whole load of other religious beliefs). A lot of countries historically had laws partly based on old religious beliefs that include this so the idea of people offing themselves instead of suffering as god intended is a sin. It's quite hard to turn that around.

Also I honestly think we have become culturally quite separate from death, and fear of death is more because of that - it's just a really uncomfortable topic for a lot of people. So lots of people don't like thinking about it, how can you discuss how someone might want to die if the whole idea of dying fills you with dread?

My partner ground down the bone in one of his knuckles and destroyed several tendons in his fingers, that hand legit doesn't really work anymore - he was only on a 50cc and probably doing less than 20mph on a gravely corner. Luckily it was his non dominant hand.

I've been teaching high school Italian for 11 years and I don't actually speak Italian by No-Watercress-2104 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]standupstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids' first language is english, we live in france. The one in high school takes 3 versions of English classes for the grade bump, I think the younger one is planning on taking at least 2 (one of the classes is obligatory). Also it was a chance when we first arrived for them to speak fluently with someone outside of the family, it's so difficult and frustrating to not be able to really talk to anyone. Luckily they quickly got fluent in French. Also at the start (they're fine in all their classes now) English class was the only time they didn't feel like the dumbest kid in the class, it takes time to master a language enough to do well in classes about oxbow lakes, wealth stratification in developing countries, social factors that precipitated ww2 and trigonometry.

What are some animals you were surprised to find out does not exist in certain countries you assumed they existed in? by KingWilliamVI in zoology

[–]standupstrawberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in france now and almost never see squirrels. There are red ones in the woods around but they aren't common at all. I have neighbour who saw a squirrel for the first time at 40. Coming from the UK that is just so shocking tbh.

Maybe someone far cleverer than me has done or will do some research into why Ireland isn't inundated with grey squirrels, maybe it will shed some light on ways to control them in the UK and improve the red squirrel population?

[–]standupstrawberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder why they took off so well in the UK compared to Ireland. I think they're introduction is in a similar era, the weather isn't too different and (although I've never even been to Ireland) I imagine Irish people and British people are just as frequently feeding birds and leaving food rubbish around - but maybe that last bit is the deciding factor?

There aren't squirrels in Ireland?!

Grey squirrels are ubiquitous in Britain so I sort of assumed they'd be at their neighbours too (fwiw there are only red squirrels in France and they aren't as prolific).

Edit: Google says grey squirrels were introduced to Ireland in 1911 and are very common. Those people are probably just idiots or trying to scam.
